I thought that the phrase "to spend a penny" meant to go potty.

LOL - yes it does

However, pre 1971 all public lavatories (other than male urinals) had a heavy door with a lock, that could only be opened to go in by a 1 penny. Now you have to pay to go into the building (which means men pay as well)

Which brings to mind the dilemma of the thrifty Scotsman confronted with a pay toilet. What to do, what to do?

Well back then men "went" free .... but in Scotland there are a lot of hedges, so ... !!!!
