I have a lot of vegetarian friends. I have a slightly larger than that number of vegan friends ( Read more... )

This. If LJ had a Like button, I'd be mashing it, bigtime.

I can't digest dairy, tolerate eggs minimally well, and also can't digest a lot of the high-protein grains (like quinoa). I also don't absorb vitamin B12 worth a damn through my guts, so even though I eat a fair bit of meat, I still have to have B12 shots. Vegetarian food is more or less right out.

Well, it's also on Facebook; that one's got a Like button.

I completel;y agree. Due to active Chron's, I'm eating a hell of a lot of chicken at the moment. It's easiest for me to digest and that's my paramount concern.

Most of my vegan friends get it. For those who insist that EVERYBODY CAN DO THIS AND YOU SHOULD DO THIS, they get the one short, simple explanation -"Been there done that nearly died twice not into dying right now" - and I move on. As I say, I'll cook vegan for people, but if I try living that way, I die younger than I'd like.

And Nicky had Crohns. Not pleasant and not to be messed with. What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that these autoimmune diseases - multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, Parkinsons, lupus, Crohns - don't negotiate most of the time. And they have the whiphand over what the body can and can't do.

So very true. And if you ignore the demands of your body due to the disease, you will pay the price.

That seems completely sane. I don't listen to my body enough, even though that was a lesson taught over and over in aikido.

Yep. I wish all the people who can eat a completely vegan diet and get the nutrition they need all the best in the world; I'm slightly envious. But the body I keep the Deb in is, well, not of this earth. If I DON'T listen to it, I won't be alive long.

And those dichotomies keep chasing their own tails in an endless circle. For instance, I've been told, more than once, that there's a correlation between MS and dairy. Avoid dairy! Bad for MS! BAD!

Um - okay. Excvept I'm a) female, b) post-menopausal, c) a survivor of calcium deprivation-induced osteoporosis, and d) not able to process supplements except in tiny, spaced-apart doses. So, I dump dairy, and the MS might be slightly easier, but I'm headed for a wheelchair anyway, because of points a), b), c) and d).

If the thunder don't get you, then the lightning will.

I'm not so good about avoiding dairy. That may be one more thing to add to the list.

Problem is, my body demands it, and I do mean demands. And since I have major issues digesting foods with high fat content (including, of course, things like peanuts, which I can eat forever with no allergic reaction because they aren't nuts, they're beans, but full of fat), I have to get the way less healthy reduced fat versions if I don't want to spend days at a time locked in the bathroom in tears.

Thunder, lightning, see above.

Hells, yes. I don't understand vegetarians/vegans who think that you decided to eat animal protein AT them. Or that you're just too lazy/weak/immoral to try their super awesome way of eating. Tim doesn't eat meat (does eat dairy, eggs, shrimp, and scallops), but I eat it like I'm a lion. His diet is a decision of conscience for him, BUT he also never EVER says one word to anyone who eats meat around him (including, of course, me; otherwise, I would have been out the door long ago). Because he gets that his intake is up to him, whether it's driven by conscience or physical necessity, and other people's intake is up to them. (The flip side is that I never EVER try to get him to eat meat, because what he eats is up to HIM ( ... )

As an interesting side note: awhile back, I was involved in a FB discussion in which cars, gas consumption etc were being talked about. One guy chimed in with "I ride my bicyclle everywhere. I have never fouled the air with carbon emissions or raped our Mother Earth by sucking gasoline from her teat. Can YOU say the same?"

I replied with "Well, let's see. Want to ride your bicycle down 101 55 miles in each direction with thirty pounds of cat food and bottled water strapped to it? Oh, it has to be at night. That's three nights a week, every week, no exceptions. Want to do it a downpour? And oh, by the way, would you like to try it with my multiple sclerosis? Because here, I sure as fuck don't want it. Or maybe you could, you know, be a little less smug and self-righteous?"

Yeah, the My Choice Is The Only True Way types out there drive me bugfuck loopy.
