Actually, you're right - I had no idea that Germans avoided spicy food. Sure, bratwurst is hardly the spiciest sausage on the market. But it's got more "oomph" (German translation: "ooom-pah") than the dumb ol' American frankfurter. German beer is definitely way tastier and more intense than American beer. And don't even let me get started on the blandness personified by so-called "American" cheese!
I also thought the large Turkish population in Germany would have brought some of its heavier Mediterranean food influences with it....
I suppose Germany is still a basic meat & potatoes country, just like most northern European nations. But if you think Deutschland is bad, just try finding a taco - ANY taco - in Stockholm or Nottingham! The only "Taco" those guys know is the 1980s synthpop guy who sang that cheesy electronic remake of "Puttin' On The Ritz"!
