L's first name

May 17, 2008 11:34

Hey everyone.

I'm new to Death Note and was wondering if  L has a christian/given name?

I know his surname Lawliet, but what does L stand for? Because N, is truncated for Near so I'm hoping it would be similar for L.

Any help greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks everyone.

All these insights into the names are awesome. I gotta admit, I HATE Mello! :D
Rai-to is also the katana spelling for "Light" because Japanese can't pronounce 'light'.
That's so cool about the Left and Right complements of their names...romantic to say the least. *BIG GRIN* No wonder why there are so many shounen-ai and doujinshi fics about the two guys.

I especially loved the scene where L is drying Light's foot and Light wipes the drips from his hair in the anime.

The Japanese version came first. Please try not to forget that in the future. Therefore, "Light" is an Anglicization of "Raito".

That's not true. Light is ALWAYS Light. The opposite is true - "Raito" is the Japanized version of "Light". He uses the kanji for moon to spell an English word, Light (and you can tell that "ra i to" refers to a foreign word [English] because it is written it katakana). I mean, I should think it's pretty clear why Ohba chose to name her "Savior" vigilante something like Light.

Though I've always found the L-eft and Right-o thing amusing. :D

He's the only one bad-ass enough to pull off one letter as a name. ;) haha or at least that's how I like to think of it.

His name is L Lawliet, yesh (^.^).

L is proncounced "Eru" in japanese. So for them it sounds cool enough~
But not for the english speakers.
Same thing goes with Matt's real name. If it sounds nice and rare in japanese they keep it, no matter what.

Unless I'm mistaken :/

Yep you're correct.

It's called Jap-lish hehe, and it drove me nuts when I lived in Japan. Now when I'm no longer there I think it's so cool!!! hehe. As they say, familiarity breeds contempt. L sounds way cooler.

Can't wait to go back there for work.
