The table in front of Lichtenstein is slowly getting covered with chalk dust as he fidgets listlessly with a chalk stick. For a while, he watches the masses go past. Though it soon becomes as monotonous as every day life back home. Best ask a question before he dies of boredom ( Read more... )

"I would want to know why my brother.. did certain things. From him, if possible. But since it is not possible, why ask such a question?"

"I doubt I will relocate anywhere permanently. I have too many issues with other worlds. Traveling, however, is looking like a viable option."

"Travelling is a tough life. Are you plan on travelling to meet friends every so often?"

"That is unnecessary. I don't have any."

He crooks an eyebrow. "... None at all?"

"There were only two other people on my world," she says dryly, not feeling like going into the issue of the 'empty' Genomes again, "and they are both dead. I see no reason to leave myself that vulnerable again."

"What about 'allies' then?" he asks, because as private as he is, even Lichtenstein indulges in some trustworthy company now and then.

"I am not sure I have any at this point. I spent the past three years as a near-recluse after the destruction of my world. Trying to.. re-interest myself in things is a recent development."

"You prefer to look to the past, then. Really, nothing is holding you back now. You can do whatever you like."

"It is not a preference so much as I have had trouble doing otherwise," Mikoto admits, almost hesitantly. It's taken her a while to accept that she has a problem, admitting it is still difficult. "The world I was supposed to stay on is a constant reminder of certain things. Another reason to leave it."

"And yet another reason is that there is little I would like to do that is still possible. At least searching the multiverse gives more of a chance that I might find something."

"There's nothing to be gained from focusing on the past," he says immediately. "While you're alive, you should be looking forward except to ensure you don't repeat past mistakes."

"Searching is a good idea then. I imagine almost nothing is impossible in a place like this."

"That's easy enough to understand. Doing so is more difficult." Her tail twitches for a moment in irritation. Then she sighs. "I was born and raised to carry out a specific mission. When one is meant for a purpose like that, it can be hard to just find something else when that purpose becomes impossible or unnecessary."

"There are some things even this place can't do."

"There are many things here you haven't discovered," Lichtenstein retorts, almost as if correcting her.

He sighs and considers, nodding in a vague sort of agreement. "True.... Then you must live and discover yourself and your life until a purpose arises."

Mikoto's tail lashes angrily at the retort, and she scowls. "What am I supposed to do, then? Search this place for a way to resurrect the dead, so I can demand my brother explain why he betrayed us? Or a way to restore a world that no longer exists? There are some things no place has the answers to."

At the rest she just sighs, and then looks a little annoyed at herself for her outburst. "I should not lose my temper. Displays of emotion were my brother's weakness..."

"Speaking to the dead is not an uncommon thing. I can do it. If you search long enough you might be surprised at what to can find. Perhaps even answers, but until you look, you cannot say it doesn't exist. And if you cannot say it doesn't exist, and you want it, why not look for it?"

"If you try to restrain something like emotions, it can backfire."

"Can you? And what do they say?" She heard the rest, but tries to suppress it for now. She'd consider it later, but the last thing she wants is false hope of any sort.
