Nexus, have a Brooke Davis.  She takes an appreciative look around the place, studying the designs (and noticing a nice mini-bar in the corner) and finally plopping herself on the couch.  She has no idea how she found herself here, but it's comfortable...in a freaky bizarro universe kind of way.  But don't worry, she knows what you're supposed to ( Read more... )

"Bad memories aside, what would be the direct consequences of going back?"

Kristoff realizes how misleading he must have sounded. "Forgive my lack of clarity. I meant the Balkan peninsula itself. I am from there originally. It is a beautiful area. Paris I am afraid I have only ever really spent time on business, but it is a nice city."

A cock of the head, because our Brooke is about as good as geography as she is at math. But don't worry, she's wracking her brain for the places she's gone, trying to remember if her assistant ever mentioned--

"Oh! That's around Greece, right? Down there? I was only there for a day, but that was beautiful."

She tries.

Kristoff smiles, a look of longing nostalgia in there somewhere. "Yes. And it certainly is."

"That looks like a smile of someone who could use a trip back home," she says, curiously. "Bet it's not scary there at all, is it?"

"Not scary at all to me, no, but I am afraid I quite literally cannot. Legal restrictions. I miss it very much, but these things happen."

Well that's interesting, but Brooke does know the lines of openness and 'it's none of your business'. She does have some amount of self-control, after all...

"Oh, so you're a fugitive, aren't you?"

Ahem--tact, thy name is Brooke.

A momentary pause in... admiration of her amazing discretion and delicacy.

"No, merely an exile. I committed no crime by the standards of any country but my own, and the order was to leave and never come back, or I would have stayed and faced whatever other consequences were declared."

Please, he may take his time.

"I...really? That can happen?" Brooke is floored, to say the least. "Consequences like, pain of death?"

"Those are the consequences if I return, yes." Exact words, in fact.
"But I made no evasion of the law. I did what I felt was necessary. He did what he thought appropriate. And I have lived in New York these past twelve years."

Brooke has to resist the urge to do the "cool!" squealing thing and reign herself in. Yes, Brooke, it might happen to not be cool to the one who's been kicked out of the home he loves.

"Well. Their loss, buddy. And at least that's time for New York to grow on you. I bet it's nowhere near the same, huh?"

"Very different, yes, but..." and Kristoff manages to smile again. "The company is good."

"I would suggest, in your own trip to New York, to have plenty of business and other plans scheduled, to keep your mind off your nerves."

"Never a quiet night," she muses, a little to herself. Maybe she did miss it, a little.

"That's definitely a good idea. I can jam pack my schedule." And surprisingly? She hasn't thought of that. She's used work to distract herself before, why not this time?

A smile. "Thanks."

"Not even when one is trying."

He nods. "You are welcome."

Throughout all this, Kristoff has tried to leave room for Brook to discuss her previous problems in New Yorkr if she wishes without being intrusive at all.
