To those that know him, it's obvious that Hermes has put a little extra effort into his looks today and given up on any pretense of passing for human. His eyes are too bright and blue, his hair a divinely perfect shade of blond, and his second-best suit is endearingly rumpled. All in all, he seems to radiate earnest goodwill.
When he speaks, he doesn't need to use magic or strange powers to convince people; as the god of persuasive talk, it just comes naturally to him. He clears his throat
to speak:
"Some of you have been here long enough to remember the first time Silent Hill invaded. During that attack, I was taken over by those powers and forced to hurt a number of people I cared about. There's no denying it was awful, but we can be grateful that I was so new, so underpowered, so weak that I was only able to harm a very few people and only in the Nexus. After I had regained my sense of self, I swore that I would do whatever I could, whatever I needed to do in order that I could ensure the safety of my providence and my family.
"Since that time, years have passed and I have become powerful. I can affect large portions of the Nexus. Some of you may remember from last year, just how far my influence stretches. I am a god of crossroads and what else is this place but the largest of them all?
"We've weathered all sorts of invasions: flooding and pirates, crawling horrors from beyond, invading Potter Pals and countless LOLs. We've done more than just survive them, we've flourished here. How many of us are now married? Have children? There's even now a school built here to care for those children.
"Then Silent Hill came again and I remembered what I said I'd do." He pauses for a few moments and readjusts his tie.
"Ever since the first attack, I'd been researching how to protect my providence. I came to the conclusion that if I couldn't contain and remove Silent Hill, then I must make sure there was a safe area for anyone who wanted it. I wanted to protect PrIME, the school, to preserve the PINpoints and other forms of transport, to maintain communication networks -- so that if someone is stranded, they can still call for help. All these and more are my providence and in time I found a way to do it. However, there was a problem. The sheer power needed to start it up was just too much for me. Even with everything I've got, I couldn't do it without a 'jumpstart'. Every calculation showed that I would need a large sacrifice -- a frighteningly large sacrifice.
"I would need about twenty-five to thirty people to die in order to assure that I could build this safety system.
"I was not willing to ask for that, because I know that some of you might actually be willing to kill for me or for your own reasons. I was not willing to take that many people.
"Instead, I came up with an alternate plan. The sacrifices had to be real. In order for the power to be transferred, those involved had to actually, honestly had to believe that they were dying.
"By now, some of you may already know what it is that I have come to talk about. I arranged and facilitated the Battle Royale. If you'd like me to be trite, I can assure you that my ways are mysterious and they must remain so. With this in mind, I do not ask for your forgiveness or understanding. I am a god and can keep my own counsel."
