Room 511, Sunday Night

Sep 03, 2006 22:04

Dean had received his schedule earlier and was still celebrating getting into all the classes he wanted. It was his last night of freedom, and part of him thought he should be out being social, but part of him thought just hanging in his room with the door propped open, relaxing, was the best bet. It was nice not to be constantly shocked by Read more... )

Evie was so nervous about her new classes that her early evening in, to prepare and possibly get ready, is just not happening. So she goes wandering. And knocks on her next-door neighbor's door first. "Hullo?"

"Seen them. Wasn't one, myself, no." Evie hugged herself again. "We went exploring with Bridge, to the 6th Floor-- the rooms are magic there-- and a girl felt out of one of the doors, with her arm cut up. And lots of other blood on her." She firmed her chin, and swallowed. "Hermione wrapped up the cut, and Seely Booth carried her to the clinic. It was... rather dreadful."

He gaped, not entirely sure what to say. "Is she...okay? Are you okay? That's not. I mean. Did someone tell the authorities or whatever?" He hesitated, about to reach out to her, and then checked himself. "Do you know anything about the girl? Someone should find out who she is and how she got here, if they haven't yet. When was this?" He realized he was interrogating Evie, and shut his mouth abruptly. "Sorry."

Evie laughed a little unsteadily. "I'm quite well, really. I mean, I've seen things that were more grotesque. Honestly. Sick people in Cairo, and, and, corpses on digs, but.. well. It was just rather shocking. This was on Friday night, late." She sighed. "I hope she's all right. I haven't heard anything. Perhaps I ought to listen to the Radio? I understand they usually report everything that happens on the Island. She didn't even say her name, just lost consciousness. I haven't seen Seely or Rory or Bridge to ask them, since then."

"Well you'll definitely see one of them tomorrow, so maybe ask then? I'm sure if they took her to the clinic, the right people must have been told and she must have eventually explained what happened." He heaved a deep breath, calming down. "Of all the places to fall out of a random magic door, this is probably one of the best, as far as caring-for-bleeing-girls goes."

"I'm sure you're quite right," Evie said, smiling a little, and then nibbling on her pencil as she thought. "And we didn't *see* anyone around who could have hurt her, you see. So it's probably not at all dangerous, and all resolved and fixed by now." She bit her lower lip. "Tomorrow. Yes. I shall find one of them and ask. Just to know how it came out." She smiled at him suddenly. "Thank you for listening to me flutter about it. It's simply been bothering me, because I don't know what happened."

"No problem! Really. I would be worried too, so I'm glad I could help even a little." He thought for a second, brows knitting. "Maybe the door was to some sort of alternate universe, like the way Lyra went through windows to other worlds."

"Yes! That has to be it," Evie said, seizing on the idea with relief. "Did she tell you about that? Isn't it *fascinating*? I rather like your roommate, and not just because she's also British. She's had such an awful lot of adventures already, and seems to take them in such stride." She smiled widely. "Even if the idea of being hurt or hunted is frightening, I would adore having seen all she has."

"I don't know the whole story, but I've told Lyra I plan on making her tell it again sometime. Fascinating would be an understatement." Dean clasps his hands together, elbows still propped on his knees. "Actually, I was talking to Peter about this before, that people from other worlds and times seem to have grown up so much faster than me. They've experienced so much and, I don't know. I feel kind of inadequate when I realize there's only really been one or two big events in my life, and those were just things like moving."

"I feel inadequate because the social customs are so different," Evie confessed. "I don't know if it's being British or from ninety years ago, but I just don't feel comfortable yet." She sighed. "Nothing more exciting than moving has happened to me either. Although at least very few people seem to know anything about Cairo." She smiled at him. "But I'm certain you'd rise to the occasion if there *were* an adventure in the offing."

"I have to admit, it does seem like you're not that comfortable some of the time. But it's not a bad thing. Really, it kinda just makes me feel dumb. Like you're all sophisticated and refined and we're all twenty-first century slobs with no morals," he said with a self-deprecating smile. "And you're right, we'll probably get a chance to rise to the occasion eventually, from everything I've been hearing. I mean, you were already part of an impromptu rescue party!"

Evie fidgeted, wishing it hadn't been so obvious, and hoping that Dean really *didn't* have Siletti's Syndrome. Not for any particular reason, but... "Sophisticated and refined? Oh, heavens. I just barely managed to seem well-mannered in London. I didn't know anyof the right kinds of small talk, and I'm not exactly what you'd call graceful." She quirked a little smile at him, wanting to giggle. "And yes, rescue party. Hopefully if there *is* a next time, I shall be able to be of more assistance, though. I stood there gaping while the older students handled the whole mess."

"That's probably for the best, though. As weird as it is, they've probably handled something like that before. I don't think I even knew there was a sixth floor until now. Much less magic rooms. Do you know what other stuff they do? Besides spitting out bleeding people, anyway." He got up and went over to his mini-fridge, offering Evie a can of Coke as he got one for himself. "Pop?"

"Someone said their were water slides," Evie said, looking a bit more cheerful. "I should very much like to see that. Although I'll have to buy a new bathing costume, I suppose. I haven't gone swimming in years." She frowned at the can, and took it, then watched him carefully as he opened his. "Pop?" She managed to get it open, then blinked at it. "Ohhhhh. I used to buy this in bottles! Soda."

"Seriously? Water slides?" Dean grinned, possibly maybe sort of imagining the extremely good-looking population of Fandom High all together at a pool party, in bathing suits. Or costumes, as Evie would say. "That would be awesome." He downed most of his Coke in one or two gulps. "Sorry, yeah, soda. In Chicago we call it pop, but everyone in Stars Hollow keeps trying to make me say soda instead."

"Ah. A regional difference, then." Evie sipped hers very carefully, and wished she had a napkin. "Water slides, and... I think there was mention of no gravity, but I wasn't certain if they weren't joking about that. It's difficult to remember for certain, there were an awful lot of people on that little trip."
