Yasi update

Feb 03, 2011 07:16

Yasi crossed the coast around midnight. Worst affected communities are thought to be Mission Beach, Cardwell and Tully. Information is still filtering in but at this point there are no reports of death or serious injury - hopefully it will stay that way. Cairns and Townsville weren't hit as badly as feared, however Townsville is still dealing with ( Read more... )

Glad to hear you're safe! I hope the surge isn't too bad - my thoughts are with everyone up there.

The beach has taken a pounding, but we escaped any inundation thankfully.

Definitely. There's a huge task ahead, especially given what they've already been through with all the flooding. Hoping people continue to stay safe through it all.

*clings* I'm really glad you're okay. And with a monster storm like that, I am astounded that there are no reported deaths so far. IIRC, Katrina had nearly 2000 confirmed deaths (I wouldn't be surprised if the real total was a good deal higher), and Yasi was at least as strong and far bigger. I was really, really worried for Queensland. I don't at all mean to downplay the damage and economic impact, mind, I'm just so amazed by the so-far nonexistent fatality list.

I also watched a few news videos, and hear what you mean about the pronunciation. :P (Although my all time favorite in that category is the time I heard a newscaster pronounce "Orion Nebula" as "ORE-ee-un ne-BOOL-uh.")

Poor Egypt. I doubt that's a situation that'll be truly resolved any time soon. Here's hoping the fatality list is low there, too.

There are two confirmed missing now, but from the sound of things emergency services are hopeful they'll be found safe and well. A lot of the mobile phone towers have been damaged, which must be making it a nightmare to get in touch with people.

We have been really lucky. People took this seriously, I think, and took great efforts to fully prepare. And it probably helps too that north QLD does get quite a number of cyclones each summer - though obviously not normally to the scale of this one! - so both emergency services and the public know the risks and the disaster management score well. (Honestly? If it had hit closer to where I am, things might not have gone so well. I know for a fact that there are no cyclone-standard evacuation shelters locally. Bit worrying.)

Wow, that's an... interesting... pronunciation choice. :p

Here's hoping. Situations like this are always such a powder keg. Can't imagine how stressful it must be for people over there.

Glad to hear that you are safe and it's not too bad.

As for Egypt, I was there last year and it's really making me so sad to see it come to this.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm glad that it wasn't worse, it was worrying there for a while.

Egypt has looked really bad a couple of times now. Hopefully there aren't more deaths. The whole situation is so volatile.
