History, but the wrong kind

Found a gem of an article while procrastinating researching an essay: "Trekker Slang" by Patricia Byrd in American Speech, written in 1978. It includes a glossary of the crazy terms in use among Star Trek fans at the time, such as con, fanfic, fandom, fen, BNF, Mary Sue stories and filk songs. That kind of thing. :p ( Read more... )

Well, the article was written in '78, and given the frequently argumentative nature of fandom, you may be able to classify it as Thirty Years of War? Which makes it totally relevant to the topic at hand!

Ooh, I like that. :p You could even break it down into shipping wars, thoughts about yaoi, and so on. A chronology of battles! Great stuff.

The Thirty Years of War ended with the Treaty of Westfandomalia, in which (most) netizens adopted the principle of "cuius regio, eius conubium,"* or, "your journal, your ship" to keep shipping wars to a minimum.

*er, if that's the right word - I'm not so good at Latin.
