I love fucked up things. I love River and Simon. And I love this part: She can change this. She is a catalyst. A plot device. The world, Simon’s world, turns around her, and she watches as the pain in his face drains away, replaced by something else.
Oooh, I am so not a River/Simon shipper but I liked this a lot. I think River is in character. She's so chaotic with her unfiltered and tangental mind I think it's hard to get a good voice for her sometimes, but I think you captured her well especially her psychic powers.
Yeah, I don't really ship River/Simon either, but I can completely see how someone would. It couldn't be about sex, obviously, but about... devotion. Simon really is devoted to her, in a way that you don't really see anywhere else. And, really, River is devoted to him, too - it's made pretty obvious in that scene in Serenity where she kills all the Reavers because they hurt him - but she can't be devoted in the same way. She just can't be. She's too crazy. She knows, intellectually, that she loves him, and she feels it, too, but I really don't think she comprehends what kind of love it is. How she should feel. So the only way I can really conceive of any kind of River/Simon relationship is for her to be the aggressor, for her to say, "I have to show him how I feel and this is the only way I know." And Simon would only go along with it because he absolutely had to.
Oh, wow. This is fantastic - most of the time, I worry about saying I ship River/Simon because I don't ship it in the fluffy-bunnies-and-rainbows-you-two-are-so-cuuuuute! :3 way. THIS is how I ship it, and I'm so glad to see some good River/Simon fic. Is River in character? Absolutely. You did such a great job with her, and Simon, and their relationship. So fucked up; so amazing.
The trouble with saying you ship River/Simon is that people don't always understand that you mean the canonical, real characters. People assume - actually, this is true of most fanfic, slash, etc. - that you mean two characters who are completely made up who happen to be called River and Simon. We like the R/S which could be remotely possible. :) Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm still not really sure how much I like this piece, but at least it's fucked up. That was the goal. :)
Came over here from Firefly Signal - this was great! You captured them really well. I ship River/Simon too, in the sense I love stories that focus on their relationship in whatever form. I agree they have the most compelling relationship in the series - it's complex and multifaceted, and broken and beautiful. Simon is innocence, and River is innocence lost - they mirror each other in a really twisted way, and when you toss that in with that incredible bond, there's no telling what can happen. I think what you described is but one possibility, and I think it was in character for both but especially River. Well done and thanks for sharing. Also you should post this on Light_it. ;)
