I am always confused by people who consider themselves part of an alternative subculture. They seem to spend a lot of time talking about how unaccepted they are in mainstream society (whatever that means) but purposely exclude people like me who aren't visibly part of the same subculture.

It's kind of mean. :(

Tell me about it. I see it all over and it's like they don't see the inherent irony. They're so happy to have created/found a place that they're accepted that they get right down the business of shunning everyone who's different. I've seen it with neo-hippies, goths, all kinds of groups. They're all like 'shun the norms! We accept the strange!' but then out loud they're like "No weed? You're out. No dreads? You're out. No black clothing? You're out." etc, etc. Just be you. Screw those contradictory jerks.

This is why I am not friends with anyone who has the combination of:: died black greasy hair, facial piercings, chipped nail polish, and any variety of death metal and/or screamo on their ipod.

i don't understand why the hair has to be so greasy!!! i mean, dye it black, sure, but like...why isn't it washed?!? ewwwwww. and it doesn't work if you have super fine hair - it just isn't good.

They're also always the ones who hate 'stupid people'...but can't sound articulate or thoughtful to save their lives.

and [ugh] if you ARE more intelligent than someone, you get to be a jerk? I take issue with this too.

it IS mean, and it's really because they're insecure. But don't stand for it, call bullshit on 'em and see what they say, anyway. If they can't be comfortable enough with themselves to be welcoming, they're probably not going to make a great friend, right ? :)
