Ever since Barristagate, and especially since Racefail09.01, there's been an uptick in the number of people who have suddenly decided that (1) fandom is interesting and needs to be studied by academics and (2) people of color in fandom talking about race and representation are *really* interesting and need to be studied by academics, in depth ( Read more... )

Academic reader here but I don't pilfer for research b/c it's not my area of study, just a fannish interest.

I will add that there are all sorts of research ethics involved in using the internets. I'm not sure how it works with LJ but I believe people would need to get permission from individual posters in locked entries. I'm not so sure public entries work though.

Oh, I know there are *supposed* to be. Some people seem to be quite happy to make up their own rules about it. I'm not impressed.

If I were in public with a t-shirt that said, "I am Fan of Color, Ask Me How!" then I would not object (much) to people asking me endless silly questions. I am in deadbro because I can just be me, enjoying the companionship of people who share interests and can empathize with each other's experiences. I don't need the unholy love child of Margaret Mead and Henry Jenkins coming in here to gawk and take notes.
