He looks like a Nga Puhi or a Tuhoe in that picture. Eyyyyyyy bro'.

For the pedantic that's a Mare's Leg which is a sawn off Winchester .44 rifle. These weapons were never actually made in RL and were produced for a TV series in 1958. Although some claim John Wayne used one in 1939.

When you think about it, a sawn-off rifle makes no sense, except to look really cool and scare the heck out of whoever you pointed it at. In reality you'd be better off with a huge-ass pistol, but who am I to quibble (even tho I just did)?

Respect for those who passed on. That's a great photo.

That's appropriate if "tuhoe" rly does mean something like "high noon", heh.

I never look at weapons closely cos I'm not interested but even I know why people saw-off shotgun barrels and that it would seem contrary to the intended function of a rifle (although I don't know enough about antique rifle ammo to know for sure). Anyway, my post has duly been amended to "sawn-off gun". Thank you for the info. My Outer Geek still enjoys learning new useless facts. :-)

Sho 'nuff! ;-)

The Tuhoe definitely think of themselves as "High Noon" type folks. And they have a track record to match:

1) They never signed the Treaty of Waitangi ceding sovereignty of their land to the British Crown,

2) They actively supported the rebel leader and prophet Te Kooti who lead the last widespread uprising against the British in 1869. Tuhoe support was key in allowing Kooti to evade capture by Imperial troops for three years.

3) The last internal armed conflict in NZ history occurred when the Tuhoe prophet Rua Kenana was arrested by NZ Colonial Police and Militia in 1916 (on charges of sedition for preaching against Maori involvement in WW1).

4) Tuhoe were targeted as "potential terrorists" by a pathetic paranoid faction of the NZ government and the NZ Police, leading to SWAT assaults on Tuhoe houses in 2007 and the "arrest" of 12 "suspects" including the most excellent Tuhoe activist and artist Tame Iti.

High Noon to da max brah (as they say here in Hawaii).
