Carnival for People of Color in SF

May 09, 2007 06:51

When I'm not accidentally sending pebbles down hillsides to fall onto LJ like great big stony avalanches, I talk with comic bloggers and feminist bloggers.

In one such conversation, someone suggested that instead of waiting my turn and doing a Women of Color Edition of the Carnival of Feminist Science Fiction & Fantasy Fans (currently on its 13thRead more... )

I thought Bianca Lawson turned down the role of Cordelia?

She turned it down for another show, one with a majority black cast. She'd originally tried out for Buffy.

*nods*

Interestingly enough, though, as Cordelia was a venal, materialistic, ho, I'm not so sure I'm unthrilled that Lawson didn't play Cordelia. And I love Cordelia. And yet, I'm glad that '1-800-I'm-Dating-A-Skanky-Ho' wasn't said about someone (with accuracy) played by a black woman. :/

I admit to thinking ahead more into what Cordelia eventually became and how she was a major character in Angel. Mostly, I was thinking about the visual impact there could have been with Cordelia determined that Gunn not throw his life away because his sister was gone.

That said it's hard not to wonder how things might have changed. The whole 'rebar' incident with Cordelia when Willow and Xander are kidnapped was based on Charisma's real life experience and scar.

Also, excuse me while I imagine Chase with a bad fakey Jamaican accent playing 'Kendra'.

How recent should the articles be?

Since this is the first carnival, I'm likely to have a 'Net History/Historical' section. So within the past 10 yrs ought to be good.

Oh cool. I can forward you links from last year's Great Cultural Appropriation Debate of DOOM and IBARW if you'd like. And you have permission to grab any of my posts, though I'll comb through them to find ones in which I am not stupid ;).

What a great idea. If you need some help let me know. I can't do too much because I'm approaching finals but I'm very willing help out in any way I can.

Thanks.

The easiest way to help is to spend maybe an hour or so online, looking for art about and/or by an artist/illustrator of color for the Carnival's 'Wanted Section'.
