The air is dry and tastes of dust. This is a long, narrow hallway; it opens up in both directions. In one, the floor falls away, and the only other path in sight is a walkway high overhead. He'd forgotten about his little problem- the one that kicks in every time he tries to leave Milliways while there's an obligation (other than his tab) hanging over him.

The surroundings continue to prove Ray right.

There's the sound of a helicopter somewhere overhead, and activity outside. Whatever it is--no voices, feet, the sound of a truck driving away--it's over in a short time. Only the quiet remains.

Dust sifts softly through the air.

Ray is cursed with an overactive imagination and a knowledge that at least once he's been to a world where things nearly went very, very wrong in October of 2003. It's occurring to him as he looks for people that maybe this is the world where they did. Maybe this is what's left of New York after-

He gets the PKE meter out- he always has it with him, that and the lightsaber- and starts scanning for possible supernatural activity.

It looks pretty normal.

Well, there was just a low, digital tone sound from the end of the hallway. The sort of noise associated with electronic locks doing their locking thing.

. . . not that this is necessarily a problem if you're a man with a lightsaber.
