Summary: In which Hakkai marvels at the bells and Gojyo finds a measure of peace.

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. Ding.

Hakkai paused mid-step in the middle of the small mountain town they’d entered for supplies, head cocked to one side to listen to the sudden peel of bells. Gojyo was struggling to light his cigarette and hold the groceries and had taken two long steps before he realised Hakkai’d stopped; when he did he turned to find out where the other man had gone to.

“You ok there man?” Foggy breath carried the cigarette’s poisonous smoke towards heaven. Hakkai finally placed his foot back on the hard packed dirt of the road.

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. Ding.

“Hm?” He turned his head slowly towards the redhead and seemed to be seeing him as though from a lifetime away. “Gojyo. Ah, yes. Yes I’m fine.”

Kids ran past them laughing, knocking Gojyo and apologising as they ran toward the bells. Shop keepers that had paused with Hakkai when the bells started were now grinning at each other and closing up shop. “Am I missing something here?”

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. Ding.

Of all the weird shit that those bells seemed to be causing, it was the tiny smile curling Hakkai’s lips that was the weirdest. It was one of his real smiles too, a surprised little thing like a kid just realising that the world hasn’t forgotten their birthday. “They’re Christmas bells, Gojyo. It’s Christmas Eve and I didn’t even realise it... we’ve been travelling for so long I must have forgotten the date...”

That explained a lot, and Gojyo couldn’t keep the grin off his face. Not that he bought into the whole religion thing any more than Hakkai did, really, but anything that could put a real smile on his lover’s face was good by him. “That’s the one with the baby and the three guys on camels, right?”

“You know very well it is.” Hakkai’s smile had turned approving though, and he finally moved from his spot to join Gojyo.

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. Ding.

Never mind the bells, Hakkai’s warm arm slipping through his own and seriptiously guiding him towards the source of the noise was enough to fill Gojyo with enough Good Will for all four of them. No small feat when you took into account Sanzo’s ability to grump. Small displays of affection like that made him ridiculously proud; he barely glared at the small group of muttering housewives as they passed by them to join the growing throng. Somewhere ahead there was music and the sound of girls singing something that was just too high and just too far away to make out the words. The tune was catchy though, and he wasn’t too surprised when Hakkai started humming along, their shoulders bumping as the healer gently swayed with the tempo.

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. Ding.

The crowd was relatively small compared to those he’d seen at the festivals in Chang ‘An but their excitement was palpable. Their church was ablaze with lights in the gathering dark, and locals were gathered on the steps playing and singing the song they’d been following between the peels of the bells. He hadn’t seen so many smiles in one place in too long and hadn’t realised he needed to see them until he was there. Tension had subtly siphoned off them both as they listened and watched a few of the children playing a game, apparently without concern for the dark happenings out in the world. If he wanted to try he was almost certain he’d be able to forget all about Minus Waves and gunshots and gods for a little while too. Half an hour maybe? Nah, more like the length of a cigarette. He didn’t try.

“Hey, ‘Kai?” He murmured, just loud enough to attract Hakkai’s attention if not his actual gaze. Sharp green eyes were far too busy watching the violinist with something akin to fascinated want, but the arm through his grocery loaded one squeezed briefly.

“Hm?”

His lips brushed the freezing edge of a limiter when he leaned in to speak, warm breath ghosting over the small portion of his lover’s neck that was exposed.

“Think you can convince Cherry-chan to keep us here a day or so?”

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. Ding.

“Have something you want to do, Gojyo?”

“Fuck no.” His grin turned positively predatory, his pink tongue darting out to flicker at the tiny patches of skin between each limiter. It earned him a delicate shiver and a warning smile from the other man. “But I wanna take my time giving you your Christmas present.” He made sure to use his dark purr. Didn’t want Hakkai mistaking just what was on offer here like last time.

“You know,” Hakkai mused, tapping his chin gently with the white tip of a finger Gojyo liked to watch, “I do believe that Hakkaryu was looking a little worn out as we went to find our lodgings...”

Gojyo smirked right back at Hakkai’s sly little ‘watch me plot’ grin. He could really get into this Christmas thing.
