I've been screwing around today like nothing, and am now sick in my stomach from the guilt. This is made worse by my self-imposed deadline/goal for the week. I had a perfectly nice, productive morning (5 pages). Shortly after 12, I just started goofing off. I read blogs, and news articles, and scripts. But didn't write. I recommend you do these things in this order:

1) Re-watch "Adaptation" so you can find a sense of humor about the trials and travails of trying to make yourself write. And take to heart that lesson from Charlie Kauffman: it happens to the best of them.

2) Unplug your internet connection so you can't go to websites. I think people like us have learned to overcome the desire to plop down in front of the TV, but we've yet to master our ability to avoid the internet. It's a killer.

But what can I do when my internet has no wires to unplug? Wi-Fi. It's everywhere.

Disable your wireless card. Most laptops now have a little switch you can hit - externally, on the chassis - to disable the wireless antenna. If yours doesn't have that, go to Device Manager and manually disable the card. You can always re-enable it later.

What I really need a little switch behind my ear that, when flipped, will remove my interest in web browsing, TV, reading, and other distractions.

I have one in software, but it's buggy, sometimes even refusing to work at all.

Go eat something! You can't write as well when you're hungry. Just remember my dad - he used to fall asleep for hours while writing and get home only to have written 5 pages. You'll figure it out. If nothing else, switch to my computer. No internet there.
