I told Bruce it would work.

*Steph rolls her eyes* He thinks 'knowledgeable' is the same as being infallible.

[very thick sarcasm,] But he trained so much, and with so many people, and he's so smart! And his parents are dead! That makes him a god among men!

I know, right? You'd think someone who'd been around that much wouldn't be so hopelessly wedded to Orthodox Hermeticism.

Ortho-what?

...Is your Bruce not a wizard?

...Not on my world, or most of the ones I've visited.

[beat] And now I can't stop hearing "Yer a wizard, Brucie" in my head. Damn Harry Potter movies.

Which movies? I don't think I know them.

How weird. You'd think that would make him much less annoying.

Harry Potter. It's a thing, mostly in non-magic universes.

*Jason snorts.* It's a personality defect that seems to transcend time and space. The fact that he can't... cast spells doesn't make him any less of a pompous ass most times.

*dubiously* If you say so...

If he's not a wizard, and you're not a heretic, what does he... do then?

Please don't tell me that you don't believe in alternate universes. I've already had to deal with a pigheaded semi-mystical being this week.

*He shrugs.* He's a vigilante, mostly concerned with street crime, but under the Kevlar and gadgets, he's just a normal man. No magic, no powers. Just crazy.

Oh, no, of course I believe you... where do you think I was trying to go? It's just weird to think about a mundane Bruce.

An even crazier Bruce.

I've gotten to the point in my wanderings of the wild multiverse that... I really doubt anything could surprise me anymore. [Jason shrugs.] Not everyone is at that point yet.

Heh. Crazy is in the eye of the beholder.

*shrugs* You gotta keep an open mind, y'know?

He's already a little crazy by definition -- a mortal practicing the Ars Notoria, after all. But being basically unarmed and still being... Bruce is even crazier.

...okay, I got the first half, but I'm going to need a Witch-to-Mundane dictionary for the last part.

Er. Right.

Well, see, most magicky types aren't like, straight human, okay? Orthodoxy -- the main kind of magic -- calls them nephilim. Ordinary mortals tend to set themselves on fire or go insane if they start playing with serious magic.

Bruce is mortal, but he's still a serious mage. But he doesn't like other mortals trying to do the same thing, because he figures he's a special case.

That clear enough?
