A new day [Jim/Bones - Asgard]

It was over.

Loki had told Leonard that he was cured but it wasn't until he left the room that Leonard pulled out his scanner and checked himself, trusting in his familiar device.

According to his medical scanner, he was free of the disease. Not just in remission, but gone, as if it had never been in his body. Even better, Leonard's white blood ( Read more... )

His conversation with Thor had given Jim plenty to think about. But as he wandered back to the guest suite they had been assigned, all he could think about was finding Bones. Disappointed to find their rooms empty, he spotted the note and picked it up.

So it was done, he supposed, a sense of lightness beginning to creep in and edge out some of the fear and worry he had been living with since that day on the starbase. But Jim needed to find Bones, needed to hear it for himself before he would allow himself to believe.

He found his way downstairs and out of the castle, an inquiry with one of the guards telling him which direction Bones had gone. Jim wandered down the path, the sky impossibly blue above the trees when he looked up.

Asgard could be beautiful. Leonard found himself a spot to sit, the top of a hill where he could see the clearing below, miles and miles of pristine beauty as far as he could see. Leaning against the tall tree, Leonard sat and thought for a long time about what it meant, the death sentence taken away from him.

Part of him knew that it was foolish, thinking that this meant he was in no danger. His life on the starship, the missions - being in space made life precarious. Fuck, right now he wasn't in his own universe...

But - the xenopolycythemia was gone. He wasn't leaving Jim or his daughter behind, and with any luck, he'd live to a ripe old age, Jim at his side. Everything seemed brighter, happier, knowing that tomorrow he'd wake up and not have that death sentence hanging over his head. But a dark thought entered his mind and threatened to quell his enthusiasm.

If Leonard wasn't dying... did Jim still want to marry him? Maybe that had been Jim wanting to make him happy, needing to prove that he meant it when he said he'd remain ( ... )

He smiled when he saw Bones sitting under a tree and stepped off the path at the crest of the hill. A few steps and he was there, looking down at him, bemused. Jim wasn't quite sure what to make of the look on Bones' face. "Hi," he said, then lowered himself to the ground next to him.

Leaning in shoulder-to-shoulder, he laced their fingers together and studied Bones' face. "They told me you were out here somewhere." Jim leaned in for a soft, light kiss.

"So..." His heart seemed to catch in his throat, and for a long moment Jim didn't know what to say. He had respected Bones' request and hadn't insisted on being present during the... treatment, or magic, or whatever it was that Loki had actually done. But seeing Bones' face now, the mixed emotions visible there made him hesitate. "...Everything okay?"

The soft kiss meant more to Leonard than Jim would ever know. It told him that he loved him, missed him, worried about him while they were apart. It said that Jim would keep his promises, no matter what the outcome.

Leonard's eyes looked out over the horizon once more, taking in the beautiful vista before he spoke. Squeezing Jim's fingers with his own, he took a deep breath and turned to face Jim. Then, only once he saw that worry and love and need in Jim's eyes did he finally allow himself to smile.

"It's gone. I'm okay."
