If Jim had thought the weeks leading up to their departure were busy, he'd been wrong, he thought on the walk back to his quarters. There was something satisfying about the weariness he felt after a long day spent getting his hands dirty, more than the hours of meetings and regulations and paperwork. Literally, in this case, as he'd been crawling through Jefferies tubes for the past couple of hours, helping track down the source of a mysterous leak. He was dusty and dirty with a dark smudge streaked across the bridge of his nose and one cheek that matched one on the back of his hand, but Jim was happy as he strode up and keyed in the code for his door.

He smiled when he found Bones already there, fast asleep on the sofa. Tugging off his own boots, Jim didn't hesitate as he padded over and sat on the edge of the cushion next to Bones, one hand reaching out to rake his bangs back off his forehead. He'd heard about the accident earlier today and knew Bones and his staff must have been busy.

His eyes opened at the familiar touch. "Hey," he murmured, clearing his throat. Leonard 's hand slid up, his finger reaching for Jim's face, rubbing at the smudge of dirt.

"You been playing in the tubes again, Captain?" he asked, grinning as he sat up, winding an arm around Jim.

"How did you guess?" Jim asked wryly. He let Bones pull him in close and brushed their mouths together, heedless of the dirt on his face. Bones smelled so good, clean and woodsy, that warm familiar scent that Jim had grown to love.

He leaned back into the cushions with a sigh. "I was helping out in Engineering." Jim stretched slowly, a grunt of satisfaction escaping him as he sank more deeply into the sofa, curled next to Bones. "Heard you had some excitement earlier."

"Helping out," he snickered, nosing Jim's temple. "Mr Scott's gonna have you barred from the place if you interfere too much, you know that." Leonard had never met a man as in love with his job as that one.

"Just a little," he sighed, thinking back to that afternoon. "Poor kid - wasn't his fault, just the wrong place at the wrong time. Managed to graft some new skin cells, gonna take a little time, but he'll be okay. Hurt like hell though, I know that did." His arms circled Jim and he spread his legs slightly as they lay back, making more space. "Team did great, though," he added proudly with a yawn.
