Leonard had found this smaller observation deck and settled in one afternoon, looking for some quiet space to work on his 'to-do' list. It wasn't as fancy as the main lounge, the one with the bar, but it had a replicator and some comfortable chairs for him to sit and complete as much of his personal 'mission' as he could. They were heading back to the ship in a few days, and having extra time like this would be a luxury.
Many of the items on his list he could do without anyone knowing how ill he was, though any personnel with a high enough security clearance would find out about his diagnosis in a short period of time. In his head, Leonard told himself that he wanted all the items on this list done by Christmas. Who knew how long he'd have after that, both with his health and his access to Starfleet's resources? Better to be completed with this sooner rather than later.
It would be harder to keep the pretense up once they returned to the ship as well. Leonard knew his medical staff, they were the best Starfleet had to offer. Someone was bound to notice the new physician on board, working on deadly virus research, and taking samples from Leonard. Despite all their precautions, news of his illness would get out, eventually.
He leaned back in his chair and studied the stars. He had always thought space would kill him in the end. Now, they seemed to be twinkling all the brighter for him, as if teasing him, all the places he'd never go.
