Return of the Away Team, Rescue Complete?

Oct 12, 2009 11:59

The message came in from the bridge, and Bones jumped, even though he'd been waiting for it ever since he'd woken up.

Away team, beaming straight to sick bay.Everyone had been notified about the away team's departure while he was unconscious, and they had assembled in sickbay. Now turning to look at them, he took a deep breath and nodded ( Read more... )

Bones ran a light in Jim's eyes, the pupils dilating, but just barely. Fuck, he thought to himself, one eye on Rien, back to carefully tending to the scabbed and filthy skin. He had to re-sterilize the stasis field several times, Kirk's skin almost breaking down at the cellular level at the sheer amount of damage that had been done to the outer dermal layers. What am I going to do about those tattoos? He - fuck, that must have hurt to bad, the designs, the amount of color, so deep, too deep. Unconsciously a hand ran over Kirk's hair and lingered a moment before pulling back as he continued to work ( ... )

Tina returned to her CMO after she'd checked the progress of the other patients in sickbay.

"Jim is still doing well, M'Benga is finishing with the other Spock now, Spottacus has Sam covered, and your counterpart and mine are taking care of George," she said.

"The Captain is stable. You should take the opportunity to get some proper food and some sleep." She put her hand on his shoulder and squeezed, absently, before stiffening a little and drawing back. She cleared her throat. "And so should I. You can reach me by communicator if you need me."

She turned to leave.

"Gonna draft a preliminary report for Spock," Bones replied quietly, then leaned in to whisper something into Kirk's ear before standing up and turning to his head nurse. Tina looked tired too, and well she should, having been working as hard as anyone, practically overseeing the situation.

He nodded for her to follow him, and headed toward his office. "Thanks for letting Pike and Winona know 'bout them," he said again as they stepped inside, Bones pulling off his soiled surgical coat and tossing it on the ground. "It's family, you know?" he added, trying to explain. "Jim's family, George's... I didn't want them to hear from just anyone about it."

"I'm not sure that having it come from me made that much of a difference to them," Tina said. "We're only barely acquainted. But I tried to be reassuring."

Bones looked down at her, frowned again. She still didn't get it...

Well, he thought with a shrug, what did he expect. He never was any damned good with words.

"Doesn't matter," he finally just spit out, wringing his hands as he looked up. "Look, Chapel - Tina - I'm sorry about earlier. About the yelling. I told you to look out for me then I jumped all over you when you did."

Another look down at his feet, then back at her. "I'm a jackass, and I'm sorry."

Tina's lips twisted up into a wry approximation of a smile.

"You're not the only jackass in this room. I'm sorry, too, for what it's worth."

She didn't meet his gaze, her eyes skipping past him to focus on empty air just over his shoulder.

He shook his head. "I just... I've not been at my finest these last couple of days, and you got hit with the flak."

That was an understatement... Jim was home, was going to live, George was stable... he was on the urge of breaking down completely and he knew it, but he didn't want her to leave until they were okay. He bent his face down, trying to catch her eyes. "We okay?" he asked, face frowning and clearly worried about her.

"Yeah," Tina said quietly. "I just... I'm tired."

Bones nodded. "Yeah," he agreed. They were all tired. He watched as she sort of avoided his eyes, not surprised at her feelings. She hated him, of course. They all hated him, his nurses, eventually when he yelled and bellowed one time too many.

Sad though, he thought to himself, sort of disappointed. He'd hoped that this one would put up with him, hang on a bit longer. And maybe she would- head nurse of the flagship of the fleet was a damned good catch, even it meant working with someone like him.

But what happened that morning came back and he was confused again. And she looked so small and tired, standing there, so he reached out and gave her a hug, wincing a bit at her stiffness. "Go enjoy your evening Tina," he said with a heavy sigh, feeling his own weariness rolling over him as he remembered holding her earlier.  "And thanks, for everything today."

"Okay," Tina said, her voice flat. She'd been trying not to think about it, trying to force the whole day down, but especially trying not to think of his arm around her, the heat of his body. God, it was all so fucking inappropriate on every level; no wonder they'd almost had a shouting match; what the hell was wrong with her?

And then he put his arms around her again and she couldn't think at all.

"Okay," she repeated. "If you need... Like I said, you can reach me, if something happens."

It was so far past time to get out of there. Tina left.
