In New York tonight, thurs. The apathy is devastating. Millions of faces and not one soul. No one notices you here. Are there cameras everywhere? Is it fear that grips the big city?

1.) Everyone who moves there is looking for something. Since lots of people are there for themselves, it makes for a colder atmosphere.
2.) Schedules are very tight -- job, public transit, and so on. You have to be in a constant rush just to live your life, and this accounts for the atmosphere.
Not having been there, I couldn't honestly say. Just passing along some third-hand observations that may or may not be relevant.
Congratulations on your arrest! It's messed up that it happened, but it's awesome that you stood your ground, and I'm glad that you're okay. This is inspiring stuff, Dan.

Also, when you deal with people ALL THE TIME as you do if you live in NY, it makes you more apathetic to your surroundings. I know for sure that I wasn't one to really stop and look at a rally or something because if I did that for every rally, I would have never made it across Manhattan. There is always SO many things going on in NY, it's easy to miss them.
Plus remember, NY has a population if 8+ million people. It's a BIG CITY which means there isn't the same sense of community as there is in Austin.
I loved it for the fact that people largely left me alone. New York is very much a "Me" city, people being concerned with themselves and what not, but in the end ALL of us do things for purely selfish reasons. Some are just more ethical about it than others.
