Helping a friend stop smoking

So reading through rfmaestro's LJ this morning, I gave some thought to the idea of positive reinforcement for his latest round of kicking the cancer stick habit, and I came up with an idea. The idea is fairly simple:

1) I get some business cards printed up with 'Thank you for kicking the cancer stick habit!' with a place on it for a date and a name. ( Read more... )

First off -- this is great! I'll be there and I will happily spot him a tall coffee from SBux for this behavior.

I would prefer (if you are open to suggestion!) to ignore #4. Not getting the card is fine, but the voiding of his legitimately-earned cards doesn't work well for me. He has specifically told us that punishment does not help him, especially when he is actively being overwhelmed by his addiction. So... I won't rat him out, but I won't give him a card if I see him smoke.

edited, because I always confuse negative reinforcement with lack of response rather than lack of negative response

Don't know him, but this sounds like a great way to help a friend. I'm tucking in the memory files for future situations.
