As if in answer to Hal's question, a green light fills the air, and the Guardians appear.

"We are here," one says.

"We realize the complexities the first new law may carry with it," another says.

"But it should be obvious that lethal force against a member of the Sinestro Corps is an officer's last resort," another Guardian states, her face still scarred from her battle with the Anti-Monitor during the Sinestro Corps War.

"To kill in a moment of overwhelming rage will not be tolerated, regardless of the circumstances," a fourth points out.

"Feeding negative emotion will only serve to threaten the universe," a fifth says.

"Laira of Sector 112, you have been suspended," a sixth explains. "You are facing charges of murder and are hereby stripped of your power ring and badge."

A Guardian glides forward through the air to speak to John. "An Alpha-Lantern is the highest honor one can achieve within the Green Lantern Corps. A simple touch to the Alpha-Lantern hovering before you will acknowledge your acceptance of your extended duty." He gestures to the lantern hovering before John.

"In times of necessity, an Alpha-Lantern will not only patrol their sector... they will investigate inappropriate and unlawful behavior within the Green Lantern Corps."

Boodikka stares at the lantern. "I can hear it... speaking to me..."

[gl_corps]

"The Alpha-Lantern will mainline your mind directly to the Book of Oa. Your body directly to the central power battery."

"An Alpha-Lantern need never charge his rings. An Alpha-Lantern need never sleep."

"And upon acceptance, an Alpha-Lantern will receive an additional power ring."

"But in exchange for this honor and power, you must leave who and what you are forever behind in order to move forward."

"So far so good but, to what extent does the Book connect with our own thoughts or maintain our privacy?" Do we get our own thoughts or privacy? It's not a deal-breaker if it can't be provided. He just wants to know.

Then there's the last bit. "How much of our own professional judgment will we be afforded in our work?"

"You will be guided by the laws of the Book of Oa. But the final decision will be your own."

Maybe it's the fact that he was a Guardian.

Maybe because of Xanshi he knows he can really, really fuck it all up with too much power and confidence and too little back-up.

Maybe it's the fact he's seen the Dr. Light thing and knows good people make mistakes.

"I appreciate the nomination, but can't make this decision right now. I would need to settle some of my affairs." This is more of a test then anything. If they reject him, then something is up.

"You would still be stationed on Earth. There would be no affairs to settle," a Guardian points out.

She raises her hand. "Um, just something I thought of. Isn't the Book of Oa still being written? In fact, it's being amended a lot lately and we don't know what the final laws are going to be."

"I trust the Guardians as much as they trust me," Chaselon states. They have requested his assistance; he will give it. One of his mechanical tendrils reaches out to touch the floating lantern before him.

"I live for justice and justice alone. I shall do whatever is necessary to better serve it." Varix reaches out to grab hold of the lantern.

Raker turns to his partner. "It is an honor, Kraken. And the power you would wield..."

"...could help in our war against the forces of Apokolips," Kraken interrupts. "My choice is easy." She reaches out to touch the lantern.

//Kraken of the planet Apokolips, you have accepted. Preparations for cosmic surgery commencing.//

Boodikka glances at the lantern before her. Her eyes narrow, then she glances at the other Lost Lanterns. Finally, she looks to Hal Jordan, and her eyes narrow.

She touches the lantern.

//Boodikka of the planet Bellatrix, you have accepted. Preparations for cosmic surgery commencing.//

"Why me?" the Green Man frowns, looking to his robotic partner.

[gl_corps]

"YOU HAVE ALWAYS STRIVED TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE PACK, GREEN MAN, FROM UXOR TO THE CORPS. THE GUARDIANS RECOGNIZE THAT AND THEY REWARD IT."
