Las Vegas: We're Not Run By the Mob Anymore. (As Far as You Know)

The Zamarons watch their experiment play out with growing frustration.

"They reject their true love," the first says.

"We have created the perfect atmosphere for love among their species," another says.

"We give their love the Star Sapphire, and they retreat from it. It as if they fear love."

"Then we must drive them towards their love," one ( Read more... )

Travis, unfortunately, doesn't notice the shift. Perceptive as he may be, there's limits. Especially while running for the elevators as best he can make out their location by going away from the noise of the casino without ending up outdoors. Its already led to a couple wrong turns, which is bad news with a Star Sapphire out there.

It's like being bolted down and forced to watch the "movies 'til sunrise" bits of "Amazon Women on the Moon" only it's really not funny.

"Travis Grey! For too long you have neglected this body. Her heart has suffered greatly in your absence! The physician must heal herself!"

Yeah, that's bad. There's no way he's going to outrun her.
He reaches the elevators just in time, diving into one he hears people coming out of. He loses a couple precious seconds finding the right button with the braille instructions.

Then he hits said button - setting the alarm off in hopes someone else with a real mind will notice. He ducks to the back of the elevator to force her to come in after him, well knowing there's no way the door will close in time - then dives for the floor and rolls, trying to get under and past her in hopes of briefly trapping her in an elevator heading for the top floor.

She didn't know how she got here. She only knew she couldn't get out, no matter what she did. And even when she tore people apart with her pack they didn't notice.

But now... now she saw him. He stank like one of them, but he was powerless. Karu-Sil grinned, her filed teeth glinting in the life as her two thought-form packs came after him, intent on tearing him to shreds.

It's a swank casino all right. She grips his arm a bit. "Guy, there's something weird here."

"You can say that again," Guy said, glancing around warily. "Hell, I knew that at the cat people, babe."

"Oh?" she's genuinely confused by that. "I thought those might have been normal - for you at least. Space being the final frontier and all that." She points to the games. "Is Texas hold-'em common through the space lanes? In fact, are any of these games not from Earth?"

"Depends on where you fly," he said, glancing around, trying to take in all of the room, and miss nothing. "With all this gaming, I'm surprised I don't see Lobo 'round here anywhere. Relieved, too, when I don't have my ring, that cat and I are completely on the opposite end of the spectrum."

She saw her. She saw her and she wanted her to come follow her!

"Mom?" But Rose Canton-Scott has been lost to the crowd.

Not lost, hiding. Rose inched out from behind one of the buildings, hoping to get another look at her daughter without being seen herself. Jennie had grown up to be so pretty, and just look at her there with her nice young man! More than enough to make a mother proud.

"W-What are you doing here?" She committed suicide. She remembers this. she did it because she thought her...problem...would harm her and Todd. Fat lot of good it did for Todd!

Whoops! Caught!

"Hello Jennie," Rose said, knotting her fingers together. "I just wanted to see how you were doing..." She trailed off, smiling nervously. "Are you well?"

Satisfied that they've made it far enough away from the Star Sapphire for the moment, Hal helps Carol to her feet.

"Are you okay?" he asks her.

She brushes her hair out of her face. Beads of sweat drip down, going from her forehead to her cheeks. She looks down, realizing that she's completely naked. Though she turns bright red, she keeps on thinking to herself, It's okay. It's nothing Hal hasn't seen before. A million times. Still, she doesn't quite meet his eyes for the moment. "Apart from the fact that the damned gem still can't figure out how to leave me with my clothes intact? I'm okay. It's..." she trails off for a moment, a flash of searing white hot heat pouring over her. "You get used to it after the hundreth time." Though, you know, if you're worried about my modesty, feel free to wrap your body around me.

He grabs one of the nearby crowd and tears their coat off of them, without them even noticing.

"Here, Carol." He averts his eyes -- he'll be respectful. True, it's nothing he hasn't seen before, but he still doesn't want to take advantage. He sighs. "So it's the Zamarons again."

"Thank you," she says, amused and touched by Hal's behaviour. Not the coat, mind, she means aversion of his eyes. She takes the coat and gingerly wraps it around herself. She belts it, thankful that it's long enough, and thankful that the fur collar will hide enough of her bareness. "I'm guessing they're all showgirls here," Carol snarks. "Either that, or they're the ones who brought us here, but for what? To take control of us girls and seduce us one by one?"

He doesn't have to be John Stewart right now. Strike that, he doesn't have to be the cool head in the JLA. He's not the back up lantern schooling Jordan on how walking down the street in some neighborhoods is an act of will. He doesn't even have to think about the Marine disapline and feeling of belonging that turned his street punk ass right around and made him somebody that could potentially be worthy of all this. Right now, he can be the Detroit brother stuck on a trip he doesn't want to be on and the widow that lost, found, and lost his wife again. He hasn't felt like he had control over his circumstances since he lost Katma if he's honest. With Diana around? He's honest.

The lounge chair went through the glass door. The rug went into the fire and when it wasn't burning fast enough he cranked up the gas. The stereo was kicked in. He used the shovel and his weight to pry off bricks from the fireplace ledge and starts to hurl them at the wall, hoping to tear it down and get someone's attention.

And oddly enough, he's

Diana of Themyscira stands back and lets her boyfriend work through his rage. She understands him, understands where he's coming from. She watches him, though, deep in though, trying to figure out the who's, the what's, the why's, and the where's.

Hera, she prayed silently, help me.

"You know -" he says, tearing apart the wall plaster with his bare hands. "I started getting press shy because of Katma." He's calmer, but his focus is in tearing down this place. "I used to be a player, Diana. I was a back-up Lantern and I didn't much like it. I felt like I had something to prove, especially after, well I told you about Rose and so -" A chunk of the wall falls away. "I took it out on the world. I dished out plenty of disrespect, even when I was working to make the world better."

He's not unaware of Diana's silence. He's just focused. Buildings follow rules. They work and that's why he likes them ( ... )

"We are all damaged in one way or another, John," Diana says in that calm, understanding way she has. She steps aside as he does his thing, noting how calm and calculated it is. "I am. You are. Bruce is likely the most damaged of all of us, love him as much as I do. We are only human." Because that is what Diana truly believes herself to be, no matter what others tell her. Her powers, her birth, do not, in her mind, detract her from being a human. She may lack some of the baseness attributed to humans in general, but she attributed that to the upbringing that her mother and the other Amazons had given her. "I do not wish to be your therapist, John. What I wish for is for us to be..." Diana trails off. This conversation is new territory for her. Her past relationships, or relationship-type friendships, have all been weird. "I like the path we are headed on, John, and I want you to know - and I'm sure you do - that I am here for you. For anything."
