He held out his pack of cigarettes to the youth, "Smoke?"

"N-n-no thank you, s-sir," he said. "Not old enough t-t-to anyway."

But he'd had a pretty good day recently so that probably meant some fresh horror was getting ready for him.
"How about you, then? Not old enough to smoke, out for a late-night sabbatical?"

"J-j-j-just out, sir," he offered with a shrug. He wasn't about ready to admit to someone he just met that he didn't have anywhere to go into. Of course it hadn't clicked with him that what he'd been talking to himself about was overheard.

Squealing tires in Gotham weren't entirely uncommon. But cars coming right at a body? Damn it, he'd have to go and be actively good now, wouldn't he? Any number of black shapes with nice, high-quality motors...
He moved to give Eddie's shoulder a push, barking, "Move!" at him as he made to move away from there himself.

It turned out to be a good thing that John pushed him as Eddie froze when he saw the car rolling at them. With a squeak, he went tumbling out of the way and ended up sprawled on the ground wondering what happened.
