Another morning, another conversation. Baby steps. Literally.

She's learned that if she wants to have a conversation with her sister, she has to actually show up at the door. It's a bit frustrating, but it is what it is. Her sister is depressed and she can't expect Jenny to come over and sit down with them at the kitchen table. It bugs her, but she can respect it. So, armed with a notebook full of cures for ( Read more... )

When Jen answers the door, she's a bit surprised to see her sister standing there. She had actually just been thinking about calling Heather. Jenny's still doing the stretchy knit pants and a t-shirt, but at least she has a valid excuse now. And she looks better than she did before. "Hi," she says when her brain catches up with her.

Heather gives her sister's hand a squeeze and then looks back at her coffee for a minute. "I brought a notebook full of ideas if you want to look through." She doesn't bring up James specifically. She isn't even sure if Jenny knows how hard the pregnancy was for her. She was so busy at the time.

"Sure," she says, pushing her muffin to the side a bit, out of the way. Jen has a vague recollection of how things went, but it's just that--vague.

It's a new notebook; she scribbled through the best stuff, putting it on new paper, leaving out a lot of the specific James references. She knows that Jenny will probably be able to deal, but she'd rather not trigger her big sister right now. So she hands it over. She's drawn on the cover and it's titled What to do when all you want to do is puke. "Here."

Jen takes the book and reads the title, laughing softly. "If I never see ginger anything for as long as I live, it'll be too soon." She opens the book and starts reading the first page.

"I drank so much ginger ale that I think most of my weight gain actually came from that. I still can't touch it." She grins. "Don't worry. No ginger solutions."

"I actually lost weight," Jen says, glancing up, "but I might've said that last time."

She grins. "It happens for a lot of women. Your body is changing and I'm sure you haven't been ... well ... normal, so to speak." There's a gentle tone. "But it'll change."

"I'm not even really sure what normal is anymore, to be honest. I barely weigh 100lbs and at my first appointment, my doctor made sure I realized how bad that is." She turns the page in the notebook.

Heather shakes her head. "No, it isn't good at all."

"Yes you are," Heather says, reassuring her. It's not worth it to judge. It won't accomplish anything. Jenny will do this for her, not for anyone else.

After a moment, she goes back to looking at Heather's notebook.

Heather waits for something to catch her attention so they can talk about it.

She flips through a big chunk of the book, not wanting to spend the time Heather is here reading it. She can read it later. But one section catches her eye. "I knew you were on bed rest, but it didn't register."

Heather kind of shrugs. She still hasn't told Leroy about it and doesn't know if she ever will. She doesn't know if she can take his guilt. "They couldn't keep my blood pressure down."
