It doesn't mean he likes any of it, especially since more and more the agency has gone "paperless." It's a bogus, bullshit term that means he does all of his paperwork on ( Read more... )

Heather is curled into the couch, reading a fantsy-based historical romance novel. The house is quiet; James is in bed for the night. She tries to focus on the book to keep her thoughts from wandering back to her sister, but she's not being as successful as she'd like. And it doesn't help that the heroine in this particular book reminds her of Jenny. Or she would if Jenny had the ability to use elemental magic. And maybe the world is safer that she can't.

It's late when he finally gets home, but not too late. The light is on in the driveway and, he can see, in the foyer as well. Gibbs cuts the engine and heads inside, needing her and the stability of their lives. He's not as tired as he expected to be, but he is drained. The case has reached a plateau, if not a stopping point, and he can breathe and get some sleep, and go in a bit later than usual.

Moving slowly, feeling the drive back from New Mexico, he heads inside, pausing just inside the door to shed his jacket and shoes. He can see Heather on the couch, reading, and it feels good and right.

"Hey," he says softly. He knows she knows he's there. But it feels good to just say hi.
