I didn't suspect the murderer either - and I know lots of people didn't...
Now, aren't you glad I recommended it so insistently?
If you want good TV, and more murder mystery stuff, I strongly recommend ITV's 'Endeavour' - the tales of young Endeavour Morse before he became Inspector Morse (it's set in 1965). There are 5 episodes so far - a pilot, and then a four episode series.
Shaun Evans is wonderful as Morse, there's a young Strange (the guy who eventually becomes Morse's boss in the Morse series), and Roger Allam is awesome as Endeavour's boss, Fred Thursday.
And the good news is there's going to be a second series.
(Or you might try The Bletchley Cirle, a 3-part series set post-WW2, featuring four women who worked at Bletchley, helping to win the War - the women solve a serial killer case; or there's Foyle's War with Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks, set during WW2 - there are EIGHT series of that one!)
I'm not specifically looking for more murder mystery stuff -- in fact, I don't usually like murder mysteries. But you have very good taste in television, so I'll have to look into your recommendations. : )
Well, look at them as recommendations for good British, character-led TV that features strong stories. They're making more of The Bletchley Circle (2 * 2-part stories this time) - which left me overjoyed!
I confess, though, I'm a big fan of the murder-mystery genre in both book and TV format, so I would probably send you scurrying for cover if I mentioned every British favourite of mine!
I accidentally spoiled myself for who the murderer was two episodes in, and after that I couldn't stop looking at him suspiciously and going, "No! That's the wrong bald person!" when they were all hounding the plumber man with the disturbing family background.
