Summary: Medieval AU. Yunho offers a golden egg to Prince Changmin.

The sorcerer bent over the prone prince who, by his pallor, seemed like pale marble. From his pouch he pulled a vial of rosewater and this he sprinkled to anoint the body, murmuring enchantments all the while. The boy’s cheeks flushed and his eyelashes fluttered until Changmin awoke and seeing his mage, inquired, “Yunho?”

Yunho bowed his head.

Changmin pressed his fingers to his chest where the sword wound was still bandaged although the blood had stupefied. He sat up slowly from the mattress, beholding his bedroom and inhaling the bittersweet aroma of frankincense: an offering for the dead.

“Come,” Yunho said hoarsely, producing a golden egg from his bag. “We’ve not much time before you inanimate again. Let me bind your soul to this and you may live a hundred years yet.”

But Changmin had risen and clambered unsteadily to the window. Outside, the bells were ringing, the people in the streets below weeping, and his sister, riding in his armor with laurels upon her head; he had been avenged. He returned haltingly, his limbs stiffening with each movement, and pushed Yunho’s phoenix egg away.

“Thank you,” he said. And kissing his weeping mage on the forehead, he fell.
