Summary: AU. Changmin fights for survival with an ill Yunho.
Changmin could not feel the cold. The frost had made lead of his toes and the pale blue of his bare hands shone a curious quicksilver beneath the moon. The snares had been empty - as they had been for a fortnight. He dusted off what frost he could from his patchwork coat and opened the cabin’s front door only enough to squeeze through - but even the small draft it caused made Yunho cough on his sickbed.
Changmin felt Yunho’s forehead.
Yunho was half-blind and feverish. Joints swollen. His stomach had given up the bloating and now curved, a concave concern skewering into dangerous territory.
“Nothing?” Yunho croaked.
Mandoongi, the last of their hunting dogs, rose feebly from the floor by Yunho’s bedside where she had kept vigil. She licked once at Changmin’s hand as he sat and bent to greet her.
“I’ll melt some snow for you.” Changmin avoided Yunho’s question and rose to thaw some ice in a pan on their iron range. When the water was warm enough he propped Yunho’s head and served him by the spoonful. When he was done, Changmin walked for the front door and whistled without turning back.
Mandoongi came at his beck.
