Well, it sounds like the apartment hunting at least has some decent leads, so hopefully you'll get a couple that turn out for you? I agree a pet deposit of $600 is ridiculous.

There are some gems amongst the many lumps of coal. The main problem is I have one eye on my lack of income, otherwise I would be able to aim for what I'm paying now or slightly higher. I'm crossing my fingers and hope to put in a bid for something by the beginning of next week. As it is, several people told me that the owners legally have to give me 30 days notice to vacate--they gave me a little over two weeks. So they can shove it for two weeks.

I'm always told that (a) half of the $600 is refundable and (b) they can "work with me" on said deposit. Don't care, that and the laundry are still dealbreakers. Even a large dog with a good owner doesn't cause $600 worth of damage.

I'm also headed toward Broward County today, so I'm going to try to grab an apartment guide and make a comparison of what's over there.

Pet rent?!? In Canada, it's illegal to tell people they can't have a pet, so no landlord except a delusional one would dare ask for pet rent! @_@

There's plenty of delusional landlords around here. I can deal with pet rent if there weren't a pet deposit on top of it, but there almost always is. I might be able to understand if it were a large and/or dangerous breed of dog (which aren't allowed most of the time anyway), but seriously, even the most vicious cat isn't going to put $600 worth of damange onto a property.

Actually, property management here is just plain delusional, but the alternative is to go live in a slum. ::sigh::
