So I'm reading "Textual Poachers" by Henry Jenkins as part of my research for my fellowship project on fandom, race, identity, and creative work. I'm really enjoying it. But I just want to reflect on this quote from C.E. Amesley: "I have yet to find a self-identified 'Hard-Core Trekkie.' Whether fans watch the show every night, miss other events to

Also I'd be very curious to learn more about this followship project you are working on. It sounds very interesting.

The fellowship is called the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship. Its goal is to get more people of color to attend grad school so they can become professor and fight racism through their work in the academy. Each fellow gets to design their own research project; mine is going to be making a video about fans of color and how fandom influences their construction of identity and community. I also want to focus on artists within that demographic, and take a look at how fandom influences their creative work, both appropriative stuff like fanfic and orginal work.

I'm probably going to post something about it in crim_intent_fans soon, since I need to find as many interviewees as possible.

I want Bajoran earrings.
Can I cuddle your Odo some day?
I agree re: not learning Klingon. Why isn't Vulcan more fleshed out?!?!
You are adorable, Gabby, and I love it. I'm so like this with Doctor Who. You must watch more of it and then we can discuss/compare our Epic Fandoms of Win.

Picard does pwn Kirk. Sorry Kirk, Picard embodies Federation ideals of humanity and prosperity for all life forms. You sleep with the ladies and have not aged well.
What would X do? Is really the guiding light of my own morality too. I even used it in a job interview when asked about difficult situations - and I got the job!

Oh, and the other day I was in Goodwill and there was this formal dress that was all shiny metallic like tin foil and my first thought was, "Oh my god, who would ever wear such an incredibly tacky thing?" and my second thought was, "Oh my god, me, when I go to a Star Trek convention, because this would make a great base for a costume!" :)

I used to be like this with Star Wars and also Voyager once upon a time, and I have to admit I miss it. A lot. Maybe I'll have to dig out my Star Trek Cookbook one of these days and make myself some Vulcan Apple Pastries or Betazed Uttaberry Crêpes, they always cheer me up! :P

I'm working my way through Voyager right now. A couple of the characters annoy me, but as long as the focus stays off them, I generally enjoy it quite a bit. TNG and DS9 will always be my true loves, though.
Oh, and: WHAT? YOU HAVE THE STAR TREK COOKBOOK! WANT WANT WANT!!! :) Someday I'll buy that. And Rene Auberjonois' 'Sustenance for Solids.'
Also, your icon=made of win.
