Trekkie Pride

Jun 16, 2009 10:10

So I'm reading "Textual Poachers" by Henry Jenkins as part of my research for my fellowship project on fandom, race, identity, and creative work. I'm really enjoying it. But I just want to reflect on this quote from C.E. Amesley: "I have yet to find a self-identified 'Hard-Core Trekkie.' Whether fans watch the show every night, miss other events to ( Read more... )

I have to say I respect how open you are about your connection to this fandom. I have similar feelings to the Buffyverse, but I also am not as comfortable I guess with admitting my fangirl status, but I'm slowing getting over that and embracing my geekdom!

Also I'd be very curious to learn more about this followship project you are working on. It sounds very interesting.

Buffy's awesome! I got into it to try to get along better with my old roommate; not so much of a success, but I love the show. I don't think I'd want to live in that universe, though--too scary. :)

The fellowship is called the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship. Its goal is to get more people of color to attend grad school so they can become professor and fight racism through their work in the academy. Each fellow gets to design their own research project; mine is going to be making a video about fans of color and how fandom influences their construction of identity and community. I also want to focus on artists within that demographic, and take a look at how fandom influences their creative work, both appropriative stuff like fanfic and orginal work.

That sounds like a really awesome project. Maybe you can find a way to post it here once it's complete?

I'd love to!
I'm probably going to post something about it in crim_intent_fans soon, since I need to find as many interviewees as possible.

PICARD >>> KIRK INDEED.
I want Bajoran earrings.
Can I cuddle your Odo some day?
I agree re: not learning Klingon. Why isn't Vulcan more fleshed out?!?!

You are adorable, Gabby, and I love it. I'm so like this with Doctor Who. You must watch more of it and then we can discuss/compare our Epic Fandoms of Win.

Doctor Who is next up on my list of programs to watch as I exercise, as soon as I finish The X-Files. (I always have: one Star Trek, one non-Star Trek sci-fi, and one procedural. Plus I have to watch new episodes in series that I have caught up on ( ... )

I have to applaud you! You are one of the reasons why fandom is so awesome. Not everyone gets it, but I do and I appreciate you. Thank you for being here!

Picard does pwn Kirk. Sorry Kirk, Picard embodies Federation ideals of humanity and prosperity for all life forms. You sleep with the ladies and have not aged well.

What would X do? Is really the guiding light of my own morality too. I even used it in a job interview when asked about difficult situations - and I got the job!

Thanks! And I'm glad you got the job! Sounds like you have a great boss. :)Your analysis of Kirk V. Picard=Truest Thing Ever Said in the History of the Universe. Here is Picard's danger-handling technique: "Hmm, okay, what do we know about this species? Let's do the research and then carefully set forth a plan for negotiations to resolve this peacefully, and in everyone's best interests, without compromising our principles or endangering the ship. We'll stand by to engage in violence if necessary, but we'll try for a diplomatic solution as hard as we can at any and all stages." And here is Kirk's technique: "CAN I PUNCH IT? CRAP! THAT DIDN'T WORK! I'LL PUNCH IT HARDER! NO? I'LL SHOOT IT THEN! HEY, MAYBE IF I SEDUCE THE ALIEN CHICK OF THE WEEK, THAT WILL WORK! ALSO, I WILL IGNORE THE ADVICE OF EVERYONE AROUND ME WHO IS QUALIFIED TO OFFER AN OPINION AND DO EVERYTHING MY WAY! THAT'S TOTALLY LOGICAL! SPOCK, WHY ARE YOU BANGING YOUR HEAD AGAINST THE CONSOLE AND CRYING?" But with more ellipses. :)

Yayness! I cannot WAIT to watch sixth season with you. The epicness will be EXTREME. :)
Oh, and the other day I was in Goodwill and there was this formal dress that was all shiny metallic like tin foil and my first thought was, "Oh my god, who would ever wear such an incredibly tacky thing?" and my second thought was, "Oh my god, me, when I go to a Star Trek convention, because this would make a great base for a costume!" :)

I think I love you even more now!! Seriously, do you know how absolutely fucking awesome you are? It always makes me so happy to meet people who loves and appreciates fandom, because I do too, but so few people seem ready to accept that. But maybe it's because I live at the end of the world... :/

I used to be like this with Star Wars and also Voyager once upon a time, and I have to admit I miss it. A lot. Maybe I'll have to dig out my Star Trek Cookbook one of these days and make myself some Vulcan Apple Pastries or Betazed Uttaberry Crêpes, they always cheer me up! :P

Thanks! You're pretty fucking awesome yourself. :)
I'm working my way through Voyager right now. A couple of the characters annoy me, but as long as the focus stays off them, I generally enjoy it quite a bit. TNG and DS9 will always be my true loves, though.
Oh, and: WHAT? YOU HAVE THE STAR TREK COOKBOOK! WANT WANT WANT!!! :) Someday I'll buy that. And Rene Auberjonois' 'Sustenance for Solids.'
Also, your icon=made of win.
