I'm not actually done with the game yet, but I'm a significant portion into episode 5, so I feel like I can comment on this. :P ( ... )

I'd think that it is fairly basic storytelling that if you're going to make us care for some dead guy, you'd at least show us get to know him a bit before you kill him. I'm guessing they couldn't afford making a sprite of him or w/e, but it'd really really help the feelings if we got to see his legendary friendship with Apollo instead of just being all "welp, that's why Apollo is a bit more involved than usual". (reasons why I'm not a pro writer: I never realised the point of "show don't tell" until this moment). Touching the whole SPOILER issue would be difficult I think because it's just a piece of soap opera that in the end never contributed anything to the story, but really - couldn't they just have said that Phoenix told them sometime in the year that's passed since the last game ( ... )
