Morning Train
By Daylyn

Watson found himself being shaken awake abruptly. His eyes flew open and Holmes was standing beside his bed. "Hurry up, Watson," Holmes exclaimed. "We must make the early morning train."

Watson groaned. "Why?"

"No time for unnecessary chatter, my dear fellow. We must be away at once. Pack a bag."

Watson was up and moving before he even realized what he was doing. "The things I do for you," he grumbled to himself.

"Hurry Watson," Holmes cried as he rushed from the room.

Watson washed his face and prepared to face the day.

A half hour later he found himself on train, heading out of London, with no clue as to where he was going or why.

"Do you want to share some details about this case, Holmes?" he groused. "Or shall I just remain in the dark as usual."

"Oh, there is no case, my dear Watson."

"No case, Holmes?"

"No. None."

"Then what are we doing on this train at this God-awful hour in the God-awful morning, Holmes?" Watson enquired, extremely proud of the fact that he managed to keep his voice so calm.

"We are heading to the coast, my dear Watson."

"Why, Holmes?"

"To have a bit of a holiday, of course. And to celebrate your natal day. I procured us a house for the weekend and made reservations at the best restaurant in town. Of course, town is quite provincial so I don't have high expectations, but still."

Watson blinked and then sighed. "A good sleep would have also been appreciated." He saw Holmes’ face fall. "But then again, a seaside retreat is a lovely way to spend my birthday."

Holmes beamed. "Excellent." There was a moment of contented silence, and then Holmes piped up, "Oh, we may do just a little bit of investigating down by the docks for the Colby case while we're there. But we'll have plenty of time for dinner afterward." He looked a bit bashful and an awkward half smile. "If that's all right with you, of course."

“I thought you said there was no case, Holmes.”

“Watson,” Holmes replied, sounding affronted, “we’re not going there for the case. We’re going there for your birthday.”

“Of course, Holmes.”

Holmes just snorted and looked out the window.

Watson looked at him then smiled. If he was honest with himself, he could think of no better way than to spend the day celebrating his birth than assisting Holmes, even though he knew that they would be sucked into whatever search Holmes had in mind. Dinner would be long-forgotten concept, replaced with the urgency of the chase and pumping of adrenaline as clues revealed answers. There might be danger; there might not. There might be excitement; there might not. But there would be Holmes and, really, Watson wanted nothing else for his day. He reached out and took Holmes' hand. "So what are we going to be looking for down by the docks?"

Holmes beamed. "Happy birthday, my dear Watson."

Watson's smiled widened.

And a very happy birthday to you, my dear janeturenne. Hope you have a great day and best wishes for the whole year!
