SUMMARY: "She's been gone for nearly six months."
*
Her hair is longer, pulled back messily, and still covered in... whatever it is that Cylon raider secretes. She's been gone for nearly six months, so Lee doesn't know why he expects her to slide out of the raider looking exactly like she did when she left. It's not rational, but he does. She stares at him from across the hanger deck, barely registering his presence, and then a dozen marines swarm around her. She doesn't turn back when they lead her to the brig.
She's sitting on the floor, staring straight ahead, at absolutely nothing, when he visits her the next day. He's brought a tray of food from the mess, and slides it against the bars.
Kara looks at the food, not at him. "I'm not hungry." Her voice sounds different, or maybe she's been gone that long. He doesn't visit her again after that.
He reads about Helo and Sharon and the baby in the official report and in the transcripts from her interrogations. Question, What happened to it? Answer, She took him. Question, Where did they go? Answer, I don't know. Question, Why did you let them go? Answer, I tried, but it just wasn't good enough. We both tried. When the debriefing is complete, President Roslin makes a recommendation for a full pardon. Lee is inclined to agree; Colonel Tigh calls them both insane. His father ignores them, and retires to his quarters without a decision.
Question, What happened to Lieutenant Agathon? Answer, I had to leave him behind.
The Cylons decide for them, the way the Cylons always make the decisions around here. There's a squadron of enemy ships headed toward a bundle of civilian freighters that have stopped to refuel, and Galactica needs its fighter pilots. Lee doesn't even notice that she's there, until he turns to adjust the lock on his helmet and catches her in the corner of her eye, climbing into her viper. She sees him, too, and he half-expects her to wink, but she doesn't.
When it's over, they're the last two pilots left in the locker room. She shuts her locker and leans against the row of his. "How's the Old Man?"
He only stares. It's the first words they've had in weeks, months. Lee clears his throat after a minute. "Fine. He's fine."
She presses her lips together. "I heard about… what happened."
"Yeah." His voice is tense. He wonders who told her, how she found out, what her reaction was.
She considers a dozen things to say before speaking. "I wish I could have been here."
Lee slams his locker shut. "But you weren't." He leaves.
Question, How many Cylon models did you encounter? Answer, Five.
Doc Cottle says that his father won't be sparring for a long time, so Lee has to make due with a punching bag in Galactica's gym. It's not nearly as challenging, because the bag won't fight back. He'll never lose, but he'll never win. He watches Kara walk in, and he punches the bag harder, faster, trying not to make it seem like he's noticed. She stands directly in front of him, but he only watches the bag as it swings when he hits it.
In one of the sparring rooms, they dance around each other for what seems like forever. She throws the first punch, a right hook that misses him completely. He hits back and her response is instantaneous, but so is his. His glove hits the side of her face. She shakes it off, and they begin to dance again.
"How's your knee?"
"Fine." She throws a punch.
"That's great."
"Sure is."
"Did you sleep with Helo?"
Her feet don't stop moving. She doesn't answer.
Question, What happened to Lieutenant Agathon? Answer, I had to leave him behind.
In the shower, he turns up the temperature of the water. They hit another cache of water last month, allowing Lee to fill his lungs up with steam. The water washes down his body, washing away the entire encounter. The sound of screaming water pressure fills his ears, too, so he doesn't hear her feet on the tile behind him.
She says his name once; he hears that, and he turns around. They are the only two pilots in the communal shower. Kara is naked and her dog tags hang down between her breasts. Her hair is loose, brushing against her shoulders and already matted against her neck from the humidity in the air.
He opens his mouth to argue with her again, however improbable it may seem, but she puts her hands on his chest, pushes him against the wall, and pins him there with her body. She kisses him, mouth open and catching his bottom lip between her teeth. The stream of water beats down on her head. A hand snakes down between them, brushing against him, and that's when he moans and opens his mouth to her. She tastes just like he remembered.
She mumbles, "Oh, frak," into his jawbone when his thumb tweaks her nipple. She moves against him, their dog tags banging against one another. Lee pounces on the lapse in control, grabbing her by her shoulders and reversing their roles. Her back arches against the cold tiled wall and she kisses him again, tongue moving in and out. She wraps a leg around his, her good knee, pulling him close. He feels her lips forming the word "now" on his.
This is exactly what she wants; he knows that she hurts inside, because he can see it in her eyes. He doesn't want to reward her behavior, but he knows that he needs this as much as she does. Her eyes flutter shut when he moves into her, and her fingers dig into his back when he thrusts. He tries to keep his eyes open, afraid that he might miss the change on her face, when it's over, but he can't fight it forever. She says his name only once when she comes, almost choking it on when she does. He doesn't understand that.
In their bunk, they are silent, not avoidant. Pilots pour in soon enough, mumbling about the long day and how wonderful sleep seems at the moment. In the corner of his eye, he catches Kara smiling.
