If you want the title and the title is what pushes and holds your premise then consider whether or not you have two separate stories here and not just one. If so, move the elements that don't fit to another file and go back to this one and stick to the plan with it this time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and advice. I don't think these are two different stories just like two shades of a concept like people say Denise Richards and Pam Anderson are hot, but don't share the same kind of hotness. :) I am all for letting the story grow on its own and the post was about not being clingy and the likes. Plus, I did get a theme and meaning behind seemingly senseless violence!!

Well, get to putting that thing together then. LOL. I know you need a title. I try to think of a few for you.

Thanks. :)
I actually like "PLaying Games with the Hunter" best now. I am so hooked on it, so no need to be preoccupied with me. *g*

I think this is a wonderful post - very thoughtful (and thought-provoking). If you want my honest opinion, I'd stick with the original title, regardless of the story's direction. Sounds to me that it sort-of fits, and sometimes a slightly vague/obscure title can really work well for short stories! *g*

Mhm, thanks. I wasn't sure whether the title would fit anymore and as you noticed, these things matter to me. :) Now that I think of it, it still fits in a way, so I may not need to change it, but damn "Playing Games with the Hunter" made feel so good. *grin*

I say go with what you think fits best...keep in mind that once it hits a publisher's desk, they're going to call it what they think will sell anyway. Case in point: a friend of mine had a book called The Sleeper, about the activation of a sleeper agent. Her publishers retitled and sold it as the cringe-worthy Sleeping with the Agent.

Do they do that with short stories?
I thought the title choice fell on the publishers, when it comes to a novel, but I ain't an expert...
Anyways, man!! Sleeping with the Agent?!?! Is that soft porn they are trying to sell. God, cringe-worthy indeed.

My vote is for "Death and Reputation" although my cynical tastes would lean more towards something like "Grim Reputations" lol.

I enjoy the twist of the role reversal, "bad guys" are always so much more interesting. As an aspiring writer myself, its always something of a comfort to know that other authors dont have EVERYTHING down pat :-)

Thanks for your vote. :) I am still testing the story with the different names in my mind and imagine, how it would look better published and I am leaning on some titles more.

Anywho, stick around with the LJ and Blogger community and see for yourself how everybody panics over something. In our line of work the X-factor rules a pretty decent part of the writing process. :)
