Tale of Two Cities fic is an excellent idea! Somehow, that had never occurred to me...

This scene works wonderfully as a missing moment. We gradually come to learn over the course of the novel that there is much more to Sydney Carton than first appears, and his thoughts here certainly show us some of the complexities, and weaknesses, of his character.
