I remember a commenter once saying that if the same number of Americans died because of airplanes crashing every year, action would have been instantly taken ages ago.
It's absolutely true. Just look at what changed after 9/11 and afterwards. One moment in time that hasn't happened before or since yet I'm still taking off my shoes at the airport. I still can't carry large liquids. They wanted to make sure that never happened. Why can't they feel the same with gun violence?
I'm sadly pessimistic in anything changing. I remember Pres. Reagan got shot ages ago and it's STILL a problem today.
They let the Brady Bill lapsed and now they want to resurrect it. Now, after the fact.
I think that if people want to effect real change, they'll have to vote differently, channel money to organizations like The Brady Project and shine a klieg light on organizations and people who keep gun control laws off the books and most of all, make it really unpopular to be THAT into what should be rightfully called machines whose only purpose is to

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
Just What Well Regulated Militia do any of these Gun Freaks belong to?
Oh, they over look that small fact. They wrap it up in "I'm protecting my family, my land." More like their representation of manhood.
AS to why Men? Well, there is that old army chant: "This is my Dick and this is my Gun."
One is for killing and one is for fun. And to many men the both are interchangable. It's disgusting this lust for violence even dreams of violence. They all think they're Charles Bronson with fantasies that they take from film and think it's reality. The Fort Hood shooting took place at a military facility where people were armed and still 13 people were killed and 20 plus wounded. There goes the argument that everyone should be armed in order to defend themselves.
Although women have done it too. Brenda Spencer had a song written about her and her actions. That kind of disconnect is

The Good Men Project had a piece where they tried to theorize why it is men who commit these rampage killings. The writer of the piece didn’t pretend to have any answers he only just asked questions: is it because society doesn’t allow men (young and old) the freedom to voice their pain and they keep it bottled in until they explode? Is it because of the testosterone? There are only three instances I've heard of where women committed this sort of crimes: Amy Bishop, who killed three professors at the University of Alabama a few years ago, Brenda Ann Spencer who opened fire at a schoolyard, killing two (inspiring the song "I don't like Mondays") and Laurie Dann (who in 1988 tried to poison neighbours first before shooting six children at a school

I didn't even know about them!
But it's mostly men. Angry men. In the case that changed Canadian gun laws, the shooter was angry at female engineering students who he felt had "displaced" him. Lethal rage can be impossibly hard to diagnose until after it's happened; how do you predict who's going to go "off"? That's why gun control is the single best way of reducing these horrible crimes. That's absolutely true. There was a show on MSNBC years ago called Cold Hearts, Dark Hands or something like that and almost every single episode was a man who really no wild warning signs--just perhaps worried about money and then they kill their families and then

Are there that many people in the National Guard?

Why is this country so obsessed about "Defense" spending and guns? You got me.
