Lo, many years ago when the show started, there was a war between Brian and Michael shippers vs. Brian and Justin shippers. I assume it's still going on, but it was insane the first season. So there were alot of ppl who hated Michael because they felt he was an instigator and trying to mess up Brian and Justin's relationship.

As for Hal, unlike Gale and Scott who initially wouldn't comment if they were asked about their sexuality (they wanted the work to be enough), Hal was screaming his heterosexuality from the rooftops. To this day, he still feels the need to drop in the caveat that he's straight.

Plus, the first season he made a comment about how kissing another man is like kissing a dog. He apologized for it, but that pissed alot of ppl off.
