where was the best place you've gone on vacation and where did you stay? i'm looking for places that surprised you how awesome it was, how delighted you were when you got there and saw it or saw where you were staying, how unexpectedly amazing your time spent there was, and how you've always thought about it as one of the best little surprises in ( Read more... )

What kind of awesomeness are you hoping for? I love Harpers Ferry, WV, because the scenery is gorgeous, the hiking is nice, and the town is adorable. (And there are more historical markers per square foot than anywhere else save Gettysburg.) I also love Asheville, NC, because the mountains are beautiful, it's a very artsy town, and there are a lot of locally-owned shops and restaurants. Tokyo was amazing for the variety of food, bizarre "only in Japan" moments, and sheer non-American-ness of it all.

anything you would recommend to someone else. can be local (because anything local to you isn't local to someone else). quaint little cute things to do or see, places to stay, someplace that delighted you unexpectedly is what i'm looking for. where you leave and think, "wow, that was a nice vacation. i'm sorry it's ending."

the absolute best place I can recall was the Bahamas ... I truly enjoyed every minute spent there

first trip was while in the military, on a group junket to one of the adults only facilities ... much fun had by all ... which resulted in a follow up trip the next year which has some interesting sunburn stories

then were the discount junkets through Laker Airways, BWI to Freeport ... frolicking on the beach during the day, playing in the casino at night, and finishing the evening at the casino restaurant with steak and eggs at 2:00am

then was a trip to a kind of out of the way all inclusive resort, but it had a private beach, daylong buffet and a 24 hour bar ... butt prints in the sand under a star filled sky in the wee hours

last trip was more upscale to a higher end Sandals resort, which was pretty sweet

each trip had its own charms, each its own memories ... but I don't recall any bad memories, which to me signals this as my place of vacation nirvana

I thought it would be fun enough, but it was one of my favorite trips. It's next on my places to retire, after New Orleans.

Sol Caribe in Cozumel. We did a cruise many years ago and one of the nights was there. Decided to skip the cruise the next year and just spend the entire week at Sol Caribe. They treat you like roalty (as they should). And there is much snorkeling and diving and swimming and eating and..... it was just grand. Of course, it was almost 20 years ago and I hear that Cozumel has become more tourist since we were there.

Scotland - Edinburgh and York, England are near the top of my list of overseas places. Truly amazing trips, and I have photos and my journal (handwritten) you are welcome to go through.

Stateside: I LOVE philly - it's a great town to walk, and there is SO much to do and see. Another great place is Williamsburg, as the history there is in your face, and you get to really enjoy it, if you want to. I like Newport, RI as well....it's a gorgeous town, with lots to do and see. And one of my favorite trips I EVER took was to Savannah, GA. What an awesome town, friendly people and talk places to go and things to see and do! I am happy to answer questions you have....let me know.
