For what it is worth, some of us weird people can taste dye. I don't like red M&M's because the amount of the dye (and maybe which one is used) is so strong and bitter it affects the candy. The others, not so much but I can ID red/not-red at essentially 100% accuracy blindfolded (yes, my Mom & I did a test of this several years ago because she didn't believe me when I said they tasted yucky. Depending on how much dye was in the blue cupcakes it is possible that someone could taste the difference. Java can tell you that we are careful in our purchase of crystal light because some of them even when diluted are too 'red' for me.

Thank you for sharing the stories, they remind me some of the stories that my Mom tells of being in her mother's house after the funeral. All the kids (well, all the ones who reached adulthood) sitting around and eating Key Lime Pie and shooting the breeze. It was the first time that the 4 of them had all been the same place at the same time in more or less forever. I still regret not going down for the funeral but was worried about missing classes (2nd Fall of college) and creating strife at home (I hadn't gone to my dad's mother's funeral earlier that semester). Funerals are sad but there can be moments of happiness as you remember the good things, share the fun stories, and spend time together.
