I find the whole "young men asked to grow up too fast, and give their lives to causes outside their experience" trope tiresome--mostly because it seems a bit bogus. Who doesn't have (or know, or at least have read Harry Mazer) a grand-dad who didn't lie about his age and run away to fight WW2 at age 15? Or had a family member who had to leave school at 13 to support his family, or... well, you get the idea. Not to mention reading essays like this one, or just knowing young men who wanted to join up to serve.
So, bogosity aside, is it a good read otherwise? Or am I going to get beaten to death with a moral I find dubious?
