In Memory of My Uncle Wodie

Talking in a comment to digdigil about the song "You Are My Sunshine" made me think about my uncle Wodie. And thinking about my uncle Wodie made me realize that he's been gone for ten years, yesterday.

This is so wonderful and impressive. It makes me happy to hear that you have had someone like that in your life. Remembering your uncle Wodie with such fondness, after so many years, just goes to prove what a wonderful person he was.

Many hugs to both you and your sister.

He was wonderful, and my sister and I believe that the only reason we turned out halfway sane is because he was always around to rescue us from endless trips to dish outlets and nights drinking coffee with our parents. :)

I can't believe ten years have gone by...it doesn't seem that long. Saddest of all, he never got to meet Bobby; he missed him by like two-and-a-half months. I think they would have liked each other. :)

Oh my goodness, what a lovely tribute to a very special person. He was your family, Dawn, even though he wasn't blood-related. Your writing about him was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. I have had special people in my life too, and I even have a box where I keep old cards, pictures and some small tokens - things that they gave me through the years. Kind of like the Hershey's Kisses that Uncle Wodie left you. What kind of work did he do in his younger years? It is a shame that he never had kids of his own because he was so good with them. But then maybe he was destined to be this special person just for you and your sister.

Uncle Wodie worked in a print shop when he was younger. He had a crooked finger that my sister and I used to think was really cool. :)

He was also in the army, in Brazil, in WWII. He used to tell us a story about how he accidentally ate some fire ants that had crawled into a bag of peanuts he was munching from. We thought that was cool too!

He was a wonderful guy, and I wish that he had lived long enough to meet Bobby and my sister's soon-to-be wife Kirsty!
