AMC Goes out to the World!

Some of you have told me that you want to read the epic Another Man's Cage; others have expressed that you would like to reread it. To all, I have beseeched you to wait because I have been in the process of revising the story for some time now--with extra scrutiny devoted to the troublesome first chapters--and wanted AMC to put its best face ( Read more... )

I've read a good part of your very ambitious magnum opus here, and want to congratulate you on your industry. (I also reviewed the story at the MEFAs, though the review isn't up yet)

One quibble, easily remedied if you want to: So far, it seems to me, Another Man's Cage is not very accessible for people who lack a thorough knowledge of all the extra names for the Feanorians, names not seen in the Silm. I have enough trouble remembering Maedhros and Maglor's younger brothers' names, not to mention differentiating their various half-uncles and cousins, but when you throw in all the mother-names and nicknames, I end up scratching my head and wondering "who is this" - except for Maitimo/Russandol and Macalaure and Findekano and of course Feanaro. (especially since half of them seem to be mother-named Somethingfinwe!) If you could include a glossary of all the extra names, preferably at the beginning or end of each chapter, or at least at the beginning or end of the tale, it would help.

Thank you! :) It's been...interesting. I'd never worked a novel completely through writing and revision before this.

I actually got a similar suggestion over at OSA, and I think that this is something that I am going to do for next week's posting. The folks on LJ who read the first draft are uber First Age geeks like me and didn't have a problem with it, but I remember when I first encountered Quenya names--how confused I was--and I don't want to lose readers for their inability to distinguish who's who! Especially since I tend to use different names for the same character, depending on who's speaking and in what context.

Hihihi, did you forget Dawn that I got utterly lost once members outside the house of Feanor were introduced??? Somehow my brain refused to comply. ;) And also with Findekano's nick that it took me a long time before I got used to that sweet little boy instead of Maglor? {{{hugs}}}

Chapter 2 is up! Wee!

Yes, I thought of you when I got the suggestion to include name translations! :^D I remembered that you would always say that you got Nolofinwe and Arafinwe confused. I used to link to a translation of Quenya names that I had written, but it had some linguistic errors, so I stopped linking it until I fixed it. Which--you know me--will probably take years. :^P But once I get my website running, I will probably recreate it in simpler form and link it on all of my stories that are written with Quenya names.

They're so familiar to me now that I forget what it was, two-and-a-half years ago, the first time I encountered these names and they weren't translated, and my thoughts were along the lines of "WTF?!" :^P

*hugs back* I am so honored that you are reading this again. Thank you. :)

I know! Cool, huh?

Finrod: Oh, very. *rolls eyes*

Dawn: Hush, you! (Meanwhile, he was squeeing like a little girl when I posted his stupid re-embodiment story over there....)

*squishes Finrod*

That re-embodiment story WAS NOT stupid and, in a creepy (VERY creepy) way, it was kinda hot! (yep, you know, Mandos, and blood and all)

SQUEEEE! for the world being able to read AMC. *raises glass of bubbly in honor of AMC and Dawn*

Finrod: Hey, baby. I like it rough.

Dawn again: (Just to let you know, I've had this evol!pervy!Finrod hanging around lately. I blame Tarion. He only arrived when I was talking to her on YIM and she keeps provoking him....)

I know! I reread it the other day because I was sick still and didn't feel like doing anything, and since I can't get on fanfic sites anymore at work, I had to read my own stories. (The horror!) But I read that one, and I was like, "Dayum, Dawn...." :^P

Don't be ashamed! I do not expect my friends to read my stories (especially those longer than the original work.... *blushes*) If you're ever in the mood for a First Age epic, you know where to find it. ;)
