I always give my students a second shot if they want. I lay out what is not "right" with the first attempt and offer suggestions for improvement. 6 out of 10 will redo the project and the results are much better. Those that don't get it at the critique. "But I tried so haaaaaaaaaaaard!" they whine, but I point out that they had a chance to redo it and they chose not to.
Ugh.

I think what always the most funny is the students who come up with an excuse and they think they're the "first ones ever!" to think of such a brilliant excuse. LOL, then look all deflated when I excitedly say, "Oh yeah! I had a student last semester who had that _same_ problem! It is tragic when your dog chews on your flash drive isn't it? Hope you had a back up set of files like I recommended? And took poor pup to the vet?"

We were never that bad when we were students right? ;-)
