Author's Note: inspired by this exchange in the TARDIS at the very end of the episode:
Turlough: "Good, I quite miss that brown liquid they drink here."
Will Chandler: "Ale?"
Turlough: "No, uh tea."
Will Chandler: "What be Tea?"
Doctor: "Oh, a noxcious infusion of oriental leaves containing a high percentage of toxic acid."
Will Chandler: "Sounds an evil brew don't it?"
Doctor: "True. Personally I rather like it."
(enter the lioness's den...)
Tegan handed round the tea and biscuits, taking some amusement at the animated way in which the Doctor was talking to her Grandfather.
"Don't believe a word he says, especially if it paints him in a good light. I swear he goes looking for trouble!" Tegan teased gently. The Doctor feined offence.
"It finds me, there is a difference you know." He pouted like a child prompting the other occupants of the room to decend into laughter. The Doctor gave an amused grin and observed Tegan taking a long wistful look at her Grandfather.
"I'd like to sit in the garden for a while. If that's alright Andrew?"
"Yes, of course Doctor. It's through the kitchen."
"Turlough?" The Doctor indicated with a nod of his head that the Trion should come out with him, leaving Tegan and her Grandfather alone to talk.
They settled onto a bench overlooking a small fish pond, where several large goldfish were happily swimming around. The Doctor took a couple of large sips of his tea and regarded his young companion carefully.
"I didn't know you liked tea, Turlough." Turlough shot the Doctor a sideways glance.
"You wouldn't have. What I like to drink has never come up in conversation." Turlough said defensively, he had a niggly feeling that this talk was more than about 'tea.'
"I didn't mean anything by it, you should know that by now Turlough. I'm just suprised that's all." The Doctor gave Turlough a pat on the knee.
"You've got nothing to worry about. " Turlough took a few moments to reflect on the odd conversation.
The Doctor finished his tea, and set the cup and saucer on the floor. He looked back out onto the pond and watched the sun as it was reflected off it's rippling surface.
"Doctor?" Turlough asked hesitantly. The Doctor's eyes never left the pond.
"Hmm Turlough?"
"You said that you liked to drink tea too." The Doctor looked pointedly at his companion.
"Yes I do, very much so." They held each other's gaze for a moment. "I also like coffee - occasionally." The Doctor gave a small chuckle. He enjoyed unruffling these youngsters that travelled with him.
Turlough's face flushed, sometimes he cursed his pale complexion, it made him very easy to read at just the moment he didn't want to be read. He turned in his chair to look at the Doctor.
"Do you think...? I mean..." Turlough lost his nerve and turned away. The Doctor took the Trion's chin in his hands and lifted his face up to look at him.
"Would I like to try a couple of your favourite blends sometime?" He said with a smirk. Turlough gulped and nodded. "I would, yes." The Time Lord leant forward and kissed the Trion firmly.
