I saw a small group of sparrows watching a single one peck at a dead one on the road today. As I drove by, the whole group, including the supposedly dead one, took off and landed a short distance away, where the scene was repeated

Sparrows fight over territory ferociously. My dad had a fighting pair fall in front of his car, and he'd stopped and got out of the car to watch for a good fifteen-twenty seconds before they noticed and flew off. Maybe the one lost and was showing submission?
